What to look for in air conditioners and fans on sale

The first thing to look for is the room and the spot where a unit can be installed, as together they decide which type suits.

A split system gives one room a permanent wall-mounted unit and needs professional installation, window units suit apartments and rentals, wall units suit homes where an external wall can be altered. Portable units need nothing beyond a window vent kit. Reverse cycle models add heating to cooling.

Matching the capacity to the room matters as much as the type, so settle on both before you compare models, and look at fans and air purifiers alongside.

Air conditioners on sale by installation type

Each type below suits a different home, depending on whether the room has a wall for a permanent unit, a window frame or only a window for a vent kit, and the type of air conditioner you need follows from that.

Type

How it works

Suited to

Split system air conditioners

A wall-mounted indoor unit connected to an external compressor.

Suited to a single room where a permanent wall-mounted unit is possible. Split systems need professional installation.

Reverse cycle air conditioners

Heating and cooling from one unit, using a heat pump mechanism.

Suited to year-round use, as one unit both cools and heats the room. Available across split, ducted and portable formats.

Window and wall air conditioners

Self-contained units that fit into a window frame or a hole cut in an external wall.

A practical option for apartments and rentals where a split system is not possible, with window models the easier fit when the wall cannot be altered.

Portable air conditioners

No installation is needed beyond a window vent kit to exhaust hot air.

They suit rooms where wall or window installation is not possible and can move between rooms as needed.

Cooling capacity and size by room in an air conditioner sale

As a rule of thumb, allow about 1 to 1.25 kW of cooling capacity for every 10 square metres of floor area. You can use this table as a general guide for split system and reverse cycle air conditioners, but always check the capacity of your specific model or ask an expert in store at The Good Guys.

Room size

Typical room

Cooling capacity

Unit types that suit

Up to 20 square metres

Small bedroom, study

2.0 to 2.5kW

Split system, window or wall, portable

20 to 30 square metres

Larger bedroom, small living room

2.5 to 3.5kW

Split system, window or wall, portable

30 to 40 square metres

Medium living area

3.5 to 5.0kW

Split system, window or wall

40 to 60 square metres

Large living room, open-plan kitchen and dining

5.0 to 7.0kW

Split system

60 to 80 square metres

Large open-plan living

7.0 to 9.0kW

Large split system

Over 80 square metres

Very large open-plan

9.0kW and above

Ducted system, or more than one unit

Portable units: the first two rows apply up to about 25 square metres. Above that, choose a split system.

General guide for a room with a standard 2.4 metre ceiling and average insulation. Go up a size for high ceilings, afternoon sun or west-facing windows, poor insulation, open-plan layouts, kitchens or hot climates, and have a licensed installer confirm.

Energy ratings, inverter models and running costs in air conditioner deals

An air conditioner's energy star rating shows how efficient it is compared with units of a similar capacity, and a higher star rating indicates higher efficiency. The energy label lists separate star ratings for cooling and heating, and its energy figures are the place to compare running costs between models.

Inverter air conditioners, including many split systems from Westinghouse and Panasonic, adjust the compressor speed to hold a set temperature instead of switching on and off at full power, which keeps the room temperature steadier.

Timers, sleep modes and Wi-Fi app control let you set when the unit runs, which keeps running time, and so running costs, in your hands.

Smart air conditioners and voice control

Many current air conditioner models on sale connect to smart home platforms via Wi-Fi, allowing temperature control from a smartphone app or by voice through a smart-assistant integration. This is useful for pre-cooling a room before arriving home or for managing multiple split systems across the house from a single app.

Wi-Fi connectivity lets you control temperature and mode via a dedicated brand app, which is useful when the remote is misplaced or out of range. Voice control through smart-assistant integration is available on selected models from Panasonic and Hisense.

Multi-zone management on ducted systems lets different rooms run at different temperatures, and sleep modes gradually adjust the set temperature through the night to keep the room comfortable for sleeping.

Fans and air purifiers

Fans circulate air around a room and work well alongside an air conditioner to spread cool air more evenly. Pedestal, tower and ceiling fans move air without cooling it, which suits mild conditions where full cooling is not needed.

Air purifiers filter airborne particles including pollen, dust and smoke, and are useful for Australian households during bushfire season and pollen-heavy months. HEPA filters capture particles down to 0.3 microns, while activated carbon filters address odours and volatile organic compounds.

Dehumidifiers from brands including De'Longhi suit humid climates and damp rooms, drawing moisture out of the air to reduce mould risk and improve drying time on laundry.

Fans and air purifiers include models from brands such as Dyson, Shark, Philips and Vornado.

Fan oscillation, the side-to-side or up-and-down movement of the fan, distributes air more evenly across a room. Noise rating is measured in decibels, and tower fans rated below 50dB on the lowest setting are suited to bedrooms.

Air purifier coverage is measured by clean air delivery rate (CADR) and room size in square metres, and HEPA and carbon filters require replacement every 6 to 12 months depending on use.

What each air conditioner range offers

Brands like Westinghouse, Panasonic, Hisense, De'Longhi and Rinnai make the air conditioners in these ranges:

Brand

Range and what it suits

Westinghouse air conditioners

Split systems across entry and mid-range configurations, for whole-home installations

Panasonic air conditioners

Split system and ducted models with inverter technology and nanoe-X air purification on selected models

Hisense air conditioners

Split system and portable models at a range of price points

De'Longhi air conditioners

Portable models that sit alongside its heating range, with options for rooms without external wall access

Rinnai heating and cooling

Reverse cycle split systems for households wanting a single brand across heating and cooling

Westinghouse and Panasonic offer split systems across the 3.5 to 5kW mid-range, and Rinnai offers larger-capacity units.

Professional installation is available as an add-on at the time of purchase.

How to buy an air conditioner on sale

  1. Measure the room size in square metres and check ceiling height, then match the room to the cooling capacity in the table above.

  2. Choose installation type based on your home: split system for permanent installation, window and wall units for apartments, portable for rented properties or rooms without external wall access.

  3. Compare energy star ratings, as the energy label lists separate cooling and heating star ratings for units of a similar capacity, and check whether the unit is reverse cycle (heating and cooling) or cooling only. Reverse cycle is the more practical choice for year-round use. For rooms that only need heating, compare heaters on sale.

  4. Confirm Wi-Fi and smart home compatibility if app or voice control is important, and get a quote for professional installation before purchasing the unit, as split system installation is a separate cost on top of the unit price.

  5. Choose delivery, or collect from your nearest The Good Guys store.

Frequently asked questions

Air conditioner deals are easiest to find at the Black Friday air conditioner sale in November, the Boxing Day air conditioner sale in late December and the EOFY sale, across split system, portable, window-wall and ducted models.

Prior-year inverter models can also drop in price when new ranges arrive between March and May.

If fans or air purifiers are on your list, they have their own Black Friday air purifier and fan sale.

The most useful comparison points across air conditioners on sale are cooling and heating capacity (kW), star rating for energy efficiency, room size suitability, inverter technology and smart features. Reverse cycle units provide both cooling and heating from a single appliance.

Portable air conditioners suit renters and smaller rooms where wall-mounted split systems are not practical. They tend to run louder than a split system of the same cooling capacity, and work best in single rooms up to 25 square metres with the exhaust hose vented through a window.

For larger rooms or whole-home cooling, a split system suits the job, as a portable unit reaches its limit at about 25 square metres.

Portable air conditioners and fans can be delivered to your door or collected in-store through Click & Collect, with no installation needed. Split system and ducted air conditioners are bulkier items, typically arranged through bulky-item delivery, with professional air conditioning installation available as an add-on at the time of purchase.
