1. Space & size

Carefully measure where the fridge will go, factoring in ventilation space around it.

How many litres will your fridge need to be? As a rough guide:
• 1-2 people: 200-400 litres
• 3-4 people: 520-600 litres
• 5+ people: 700 litres

2. Type & style

Think about which type of fridge you want:
• A big French door fridge that fits big party platters and pizza boxes, and has lots of compartments so it’s easy to keep everything organised
• A side-by-side fridge with a full-height fridge and freezer and lots of shelves and drawers so you can find things in both compartments fast
• A bottom-mount design that has the fridge on top for easy eye-level access
• A traditional top mount fridge with the freezer above the fridge compartment
• A little wine fridge to keep your wine perfectly chilled and free up fridge space

Also think about the style. Do you want a stainless steel, black glass, black or white steel fridge, or an integrated fridge that’s hidden behind a kitchen cabinetry panel?

3. Energy efficiency

Compare how much energy different fridges use and their energy star ratings. The more energy star ratings a fridge has, the less it will add to your electricity bills.

Most older fridges are not very energy efficient when compared with today’s latest models, so considering updating your fridge sooner rather than later for bill savings.

Keep in mind that fridges with built-in ice makers and water dispensers use more energy.

4. Special features

Think about whether you want:
• A French door or side-by-side fridge with a water dispenser or an ice maker
• Adjustable shelves so you can change them to suit your changing fridge needs
• Safety glass that stops spills from dripping down onto other shelves
• Lockable compartments to keep medications and treats out of kids’ reach
• Anti-bacterial coatings and crisper technology so food stays fresher for longer
• LED lights for bright light that’s more energy efficient than panel lights
• To be able to set different temperatures for different compartments
