Best Low Carb Breakfasts For A Healthier Start To Your Day

December 12, 2023 - 4 min read

Lost for low carb ideas for that first meal of the day? Pimp up your plate with these terrific low carb breakfast recipes that you can whip up in your convection oven, air fryer and other go-to small kitchen appliances.

How about low carb pancakes? Or nourishing veggie creations to awaken your tastebuds? A low carb breakfast is light on carbohydrates like white bread or sugary cereals; instead, it's packed with protein, healthy fats and flavours (think spicy baked eggs) to fill your tum and fuel your day.

“A low carb breakfast with protein will keep you fuller for longer,” says nutritionist Lexi Crouch. “This may contribute to weight loss, boost your endurance by making you less sluggish during the day, and can even increase your metabolism and keep blood sugar levels balanced.”

Rise and shine! Here are the best low carb breakfast ideas and appliances for cafe-quality breakfasts at home.

Must-Have Major Appliances For Better Breakfasts

The right appliances, with the right features at the ready, will make low carb brekkies a breeze. So let’s get your kitchen support crew sorted!

“Upgrading your fridge? Look for one with an in-built ice dispenser for morning smoothies. Or for breakfast leftovers that become tomorrow’s brunch, the latest French door fridges have clever temperature zones to keep food fresher for longer,” says Peter Simic, The Good Guys Buyer – Refrigeration.
Need to hustle most mornings? Join the club! Consider a multifunction electric oven that can microwave, bake and grill at the same time. (For a low carb feast in a flash, microwave sliced mushrooms or tomatoes sprinkled with your favourite herbs, while you simultaneously grill some crispy bacon.)

Must-Have Benchtop Appliances For Better Breakfasts

Once you’ve assembled your dream major appliances, choose the benchtop helpers – like egg cookers, air fryers and blenders – that will also help make light work of those low carb morning meals.

Runny, soft or hard-centred? Whatever your preference, you can enjoy utterly effortless eggs, poached or boiled perfectly every time, courtesy of an egg cooker (destined to become every carb counter’s new bestie!).

Feel the need for speed? Go for a toaster oven that can air fry, too, and indulge in quick and easy low carb spins on breakfast classics like bacon and egg rolls. (Roll up scrambled eggs and cheese inside bacon slices and air fry until the bacon is crispy for an oh-so-good protein fix).

An all-powerful food processor that can chop, slice, grate and juice is another great go-to prop for easy low carb breakfasts on the go. Think seeds and nut butters blitzed for healthy breakfast bars and in smoothies.

Homemade Greek Yoghurt Recipe

Want a low carb breakfast without eggs? Enjoy a bowl of creamy goodness with this low carb breakfast recipe from Sunbeam, made with the Sunbeam Food Dehydrator. Dehydrators are great for growing the healthy bacteria and probiotics that yoghurt is prized for, and let you customise the consistency just how you like it. Make the night before and serve chilled in the morning with your favourite fruit.

Preparation time: 20 mins

Cooking time: 7-9 hours

Makes 1L

Creamy yoghurt in patterned glass jars topped with granola and fresh raspberries and blueberries on a white surface. Image and recipe by Sunbeam.

  • 4 cups (1L) full cream milk
  • 2-3 tsp Greek yoghurt
  • Sterilised, heat-proof jars

1. Set the Dehydrator to 40˚C. Arrange trays to accommodate the height of the jars. The larger the jar, the longer the yoghurt will take to form.

2. In a saucepan, bring milk to a simmer, about 80˚C. Use the tip of a stick thermometer to check milk temperature. Do not boil. Remove saucepan from stove.

3. Whisk in yoghurt. Pour into jars.

4. Place the jars in the Dehydrator. Leave for 7 to 9 hours. The yoghurt should be firm but will be firmer once chilled.

5. For a thicker yoghurt, scoop the finished yoghurt into a tea towel and hold over the sink to drain extra liquid.

6. Refrigerate for up to 1 week.
