Which Blender is right for you?

There are a wide range of models available to choose from, ranging from budget options to expensive high-end units. Blenders with a glass jug are often pricier, but they are easier to clean, less likely to scratch and odour resistant. Plastic jugs are more portable, although they can be prone to cracking and scratching, as well as retaining the smell of foods blended inside. Stainless steel jugs might be a good fit for your kitchen and look sleek, however, you may have problems seeing what’s going on inside when the appliance is blending. Hand blenders are also available, enabling you to puree foods right in the pan for extra convenience.

Types of Blenders

Blenders, juicers and food processors perform relatively similar functions, but which is right for you? If you just want to be able to make milkshakes, smoothies with frozen fruit and big batches of soup, and if you also want to make homemade nut butters and whip up cocktails with crushed ice, go for a high-powered blender. Juicers just do one thing—extract juice from fruit and veggies, leaving the fibrous pulp behind in the juicer. If you want to be able to do more with one kitchen appliance, including having your everyday dinner ingredients chopped and sliced fast for you, a food processor might be a better option.

Blenders

Quick and easy, blenders combine everything from fresh fruit and yogurt to make smoothies, to ice and nuts for healthy homemade nut butters. Top-of-the-line blenders have high-performance motors that can easily handle blending soups and smoothies to perfection.

Portable Blenders

Need your morning smoothie or breakfast on the go? Clever, compact blenders make blending quick and easy, plus, you can take your favourite blends to work, the gym, or with you in the car.

Juicers

Juicers combine spinning blades and pressing mechanisms to remove pulp, leaving you with just the juice. Learn more about juicers here.

Food Processors

Food processors chop, mix and blend, typically used to fast-track ingredient preparation before making a meal. Learn more about food processors here.

Blender size guide

Blenders come in a variety of sizes. Whether you're adding a blender to your countertop as a permanent addition or will only be bringing it out of the cupboard on occasion, choose the right-sized blender to fit your needs.

A single-serve blender makes enough liquid to fill the cup it's contained in - perfect for catering to one person.

Larger blenders often come with extra cups and attachments, making them suitable for multiple people.

Portable blenders are compact in size, making them easy to carry around.

Blender Technology Glossary

We’ll break down all the tech talk and acronyms that you need to know.

Touchpad control panel: A flat, button-style interface located on the blender, used to control functions instead of traditional knobs or switches.

Speed settings: Different blending speeds (such as slow, medium, and fast) that allow you to control texture and consistency. Advanced models often offer multiple speed options.

Stainless steel blades: Strong, durable blades inside the blender, designed to handle tough ingredients like ice, nuts, and frozen fruit.

Base: The bottom part of the blender that houses the motor. A larger, heavier base helps keep the blender stable while in use.

Lid opening (pour hole): A small opening in the blender lid that lets you add in ingredients while blending and allows steam to escape when blending hot foods.

Preset programs: Pre-set functions on the blender - these may include: chopping, stirring and liquefying, making blending easier with the press of a button.

Blender FAQs

To make slushies in a blender, first collect your ingredients, including a base liquid (fruit juice, soft drink, or flavoured water can be used), ice, and frozen fruit. Then, add the ice and frozen fruit to the blender, pour in the base liquid and start blending on a slow speed. Once the ice is broken down, blend on a higher speed until the consistency is to your liking.

To clean the jug of your blender, simply fill it halfway with warm water, add a few drops of dish soap and blend for 30-60 seconds. Then, rinse the blender thoroughly. Refer to your product's user manual for detailed instructions.

Did you know you can make mayonnaise in a hand blender? Add egg, lemon juice and mustard to a bowl that fits the head of your hand blender. Optional extras are vinegar, salt and garlic. Add oil on top and allow it to settle, then place the head of your hand blender at the bottom of the bowl or cup, underneath the egg yolk, and blend on high speed for 15-20 seconds. Then, slowly lift and tilt the blender until the oil is combined.
