February 22, 2024 – 4 min read

Make life easier and level up your cleaning (with minimal effort!) with the addition of a robot vacuum cleaner. It wasn’t long ago that robot vacuums were thought of as a thing of the future, but they’ve quickly become a must-have item for many families. Offering intelligent cleaning with enhanced performance, most of the newer models acquire the latest features in tech, allowing you to connect a compatible smartphone and home Wi-Fi network to set your robot vacuum to work from anywhere, at any time.

Working from home? Don’t let the housework distract you – a robot vacuum can clean while you work – even when you’re back in the office! If you’ve been pushing around a traditional vacuum cleaner and want to introduce a robot vacuum cleaner into your cleaning routine, then now’s the perfect time to upgrade.

Which Robot Vacuum Cleaner Should I Buy?

Finding the right robot vacuum cleaner for your home is the name of the game. If next level, quality cleaning is on your wish list, then the Dyson 360 Vis Nav™ Robotic Vacuum is the robo vac for you. If you’re looking for smart control, the MyDyson™ smart home app lets you control, customise and schedule your robot from anywhere, so you’ll always come home to clean floors. Some of its great benefits include a 360° vision system, powerful HEPA filtration and incredible suction that eliminates dust and debris – even in those hard-to-reach spots against walls and in corners. The Dyson 360 Vis Nav™ Robotic Vacuum is the machine you need to transform your cleaning routine.

How Good Is A Robot Vacuum Cleaner?

A robot vacuum cleaner is a fantastic addition to any modern home. They propel themselves around the house on wheels, and the question of how good they are largely depends on what you want to use them for. For working parents, the robot vac can be set to patrol the home everyday, picking up dust, dirt and any pet hair as it goes. Hugely time saving, one of their key benefits is that they’re small, compact and can be programmed to do the dirty work for you.

But do robot vacuums really work? They really do – and the best part of it is that they don’t need your help to get the job done (except if they get stuck under your couch or trapped in the bathroom!). There are certain things you need to consider, however, when it comes to their functionality and features.

What Should I Look For When Buying A Robot Vacuum?

As with any home appliance, you want to make sure you pick a vacuum that’s going to fit your space. On top of that, you’ll want to look for the following features:

  • Lithium Ion battery – this will give you the best running and recharge times;

  • Virtual walls – once your robot vacuum has mapped its path through your home, you can program it to avoid certain areas or rooms entirely.

  • Quality filtration – ideally dust particles are captured by the robot vacuum and not sent right back into the air;

  • Scheduling modes – so you can set cleaning times; and

  • Smart navigation – the last thing you need is to have to keep an eye on your robot vac to make sure it’s cleaning floors (and not going off on random adventures).

There’s a lot of choice when it comes to robot vacuum cleaners these days. However, one thing they all do is take away some of the cleaning and free you up to do more of what you love.

Fuss Free Cleaning With Robot Vacuums

You might be asking: are robot vacuum cleaners worth it? When it comes to cleaning, the answer is a resounding yes! While you’re rearranging your books by colour, or holding your clothes to see which ones ‘spark joy’, your robot vacuum cleaner is taking care of your floors and carpets. Be liberated from the chore of vacuuming and focus your energies where they’re needed – unless, of course, vacuuming is your thing!

Can Robot Vacuums Replace Normal Vacuums?

They can’t completely replace your regular vacuum cleaner (yet) but they can keep your floor free of dust and save you cleaning time in the process. Many newer models have incredibly powerful suction and durable wheels designed to keep them moving over any bumps or rugs. They’re designed to leave and return to a docking station, so no more tripping over power cords or missing hard to reach corners of the room.

To make the most of your robot vacuum cleaner, use it in space that are mostly uncluttered and have clear floors. Getting rid of any obstacles makes it easier for your vacuum to perform at its best. Wooden or vinyl floors are a breeze for a robot vac, but they also do a great job on carpet. Some models are better at one or the other, so make sure you check the specifications before you commit.

Do You Need Wi-Fi For A Robot Vacuum Cleaner?

Not necessarily. While the more recent models have great connectivity with the ability to control the vacuum via an app, more affordable models tend to come with a battery powered remote. It’s really up to you and how savvy you are with tech, but one of the advantages of the apps is that they may offer Google Assistant or Amazon Alex integration. This means you can activate it by saying a key phrase, like “start cleaning”!

Tips For Maintaining A Robot Vacuum

Every appliance needs a little TLC every now and then to keep it working optimally. A robot vacuum cleaner isn’t any different. Here are a few things to keep an eye on to make sure your tiny cleaner is living up to all the hype.

Make Sure The Floor Is Clear

As mentioned earlier, keep the floor clear of any potential obstacle. Kids toys, shoes, clothes, cords, food scraps and even animal waste can be disastrous for your vacuum.

Check The Sensors

Every robot vacuum cleaner has built-in sensors, usually at the front and back, so they can steer clear of any furniture or walls. If your vacuum does get stuck under the couch, don’t rush to pick it up and redirect it, as this may damage the sensors. Instead, lift up the couch and let the robot cleaner navigate its way out. If you think the sensors aren’t working properly, wipe them with a damp cloth, but don’t use any detergents or soaps.

Empty The Dust Bin And Clean The Filters

Just like your regular vacuum cleaner, robot vacs have a dust bin and filters. Clean these out regularly to ensure maximum cleaning power. Filters may need to be replaced after being used for a few months, so keep an eye on how they’re looking.

Regularly Clean The Wheels And Brushes

Hair and dust can get trapped in the wheels and brushes of your robot vacuum cleaner, so take the time to make sure they’re clean. Long hairs and string can get wound up in the wheels and may damage the motor, so it’s important to remove the wheels regularly and clean them using a dust brush. Avoid using water directly on the robot vacuum as there’s a lot of sensitive electronics embedded in its body.
