Are OLED TVs The Best?

OLED TVs are absolutely fantastic. They have the blackest blacks on the market, and the best light control of affordable TVs, only truly rivalled by MicroLED TVs (at the higher end of the pricing scale). In a dark room, you would be hard-pressed to do better than an OLED TV.

“But, if you have a brighter room, like a living room with a lot of windows, Mini LED TV could be a better option,” says John Milanos. “They still have excellent light control and black blacks, but can go much, much brighter, which is what you need on a bright day, and to get the most out of those fancy HDR textures.”

Different brands have different names for Mini LED, such as QNED and Neo QLED.

What Size TV Should I Buy?

Here’s something you might not know: the higher the definition of your TV (Full HD, 4K, then 8K), the closer you can sit to a bigger TV.
That’s why the most popular TV size in Australian living rooms is now a majestic 85 inches. Big screens work beautifully in any space, no matter the size.

“Times have changed. On the standard definition TVs we grew up with, the pixels were huge, so we had to sit quite far away to get a smooth picture,” says John Milanos.

“But now, with 4K and even 8K definitions, the pixels are so small that you really have to get up close before you can pick them out. So, you can have your dream big-screen cinema experience at home, without having to have a giant living room.”

This trend was reflected at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, with companies now starting to explore 98 inches and bigger screens in premium models.
“Samsung unveiled a ‘modular’ MicroLED TV of up to 156 inches – a bezel-less design which, the company says, will allow customers to create a TV sized for their needs. Plus, there’s been a focus on short-throw projectors these past few years,” says award-winning technology journalist Alice Clarke.

“TVs are only going to get bigger across all price points. I wouldn’t be surprised if 100 inches became the norm within the next five years.”

Who Makes The Best TVs?

If you’re looking for the best big-screen TVs with premium, cutting-edge technology, then LG, Sony and Samsung are three brands to look at. How Can I Choose The Best TV Based On My Needs?

First, consider the size of your space. Measure your room and determine the ideal screen size that provides an immersive viewing experience without overwhelming the space. Next, think about your viewing habits. Are you a movie enthusiast, a sports lover, or a gaming aficionado? Consider the features that matter most to you, such as picture quality, refresh rate, and connectivity options. For stunning visuals, look for technologies like OLED or QLED. If you're into gaming, prioritise TVs with low input lag and high refresh rates. Finally, set a budget that works for you and explore different brands and models within that range.
