Interested in lightweight, compact transport that can be carried around with you? Check out Electric Scooters.

Whether reducing a carbon footprint or cutting back on petrol costs, consider an Electric Scooter. If you’re feeling lost, here’s some helpful info.

How does an Electric Scooter work?

Electric Scooters are a battery powered form of transportation designed for a single rider. They are easy to ride and maintain when compared with other vehicles and many models can be folded and carried, making them easy to store when not in use.

E-Scooters have many of the same features of a regular scooter that's manually pushed except with a sturdier build quality and features designed for more serious distances. They consist of a front and back wheel with a flat deck between them to stand on with a lithium-ion battery housed inside.

At the front of an Electric Scooter is a handlebar to hold in both hands and steer like a traditional scooter or bicycle. The handlebar is generally the location of the throttle and brake to control acceleration, slowing and stopping. In the centre of the handlebar is a screen to monitor driving modes (essentially "gears" with different speed and power limits) and display information like the speed and remaining battery charge.

Is riding an Electric Scooter legal in Australia?

Before deciding on a new Electric Scooter considering the local laws regarding their use in the state or territory. Laws regarding the use of Electric Scooters are not the same everywhere in Australia, although there is significant push to see the federal government implement Australia wide laws. Please check what the latest laws are in place in your state or territory for a more detailed breakdown.

Can I ride an Electric Scooter manually?

Electric Scooters have similar form factor as traditional scooters with a more robust build. Given the similarities and the reliance on a rechargeable battery for power, you may wonder if an electric scooter can be pushed manually with the feet and used like a regular scooter to preserve battery charge or as a fallback if out of battery.

Some models explicitly warn against manual riding. Be aware that the warning may be phrased as riding with one foot rather than manual but these are advising against the same thing. Always follow the safety advice in the manual.

Other Electric Scooters could technically be ridden manually in a pinch but it's generally not recommended. They're heavier and decks tend to be more elevated than regular scooters making them harder to propel with a foot. If the battery is low consider walking or using public transport instead.

What should I look out for when buying an Electric Scooter?

Consider what sort of maximum distances need to be travelled on an Electric Scooter. The maximum range refers to the distance it can travel off a single full charge. The range depends on motor power, rider weight, the weight of the scooter, weather, driving mode and average speed. It's recommended to take a charger for the scooter with you. Also make sure to read the laws regarding Electric Scooter use in your state or territory.

Some models can be folded for easy storage. If carrying the scooter, consider how much it weighs. Some models come with a handle or shoulder strap to help carry it.

All models provide their max load or max rider weight. Most models can support weights up to 100 or 120 kg. Be aware if your weight is close to the maximum without going over, it will reduce the top speed and range of the scooter. It is unsafe to exceed the reported weight limit.
