At a glance
The Dyson V8 Cordless Vacuum is a lightweight cordless stick vacuum for everyday home cleaning, especially in small homes and pet households. Its strengths are strong suction, anti-tangle tools, handheld versatility and whole-machine filtration. It suits buyers wanting a premium cordless model without stepping to Dyson’s top range. One limitation is that battery life drops to up to 5 minutes in Max mode.

Things to consider
It is a strong everyday cordless vacuum, but it offers shorter high-power run time and less top-end suction than newer premium Dyson models.
Pet hair performance score
9/10 - anti-tangle cleaner head and hair screw tool make it especially effective for picking up pet hair on floors and furniture.
Carpet vs hard floor suitability
Well suited to both carpet and hard floors, with strong all-round performance for mixed-surface homes.
Portability rating
9/10 - lightweight cordless design and handheld conversion make it easy to carry, store and use on stairs or in the car.
Noise level vs category average
Quieter than many stick vacuums in its class, with design features aimed at lower noise during operation.
Allergy friendliness
8/10 - whole-machine filtration captures fine particles down to 0.3 microns, which helps reduce dust and allergens in the exhaust air.
Key benefits
- Dyson digital motor V8: Spins up to 107,000rpm to deliver strong suction for everyday whole-home cleaning.
- Up to 40 minutes run time: Gives you up to 40 minutes of fade-free cordless cleaning in powerful mode with non-motorised tools.
- Two power modes: Lets you switch between longer everyday cleaning and a higher-power Max mode for tougher messes.
- Motorbar cleaner head: De-tangling vanes help clear wrapped hair from the brush bar while you clean.
- Hair screw tool: Picks up hair quickly from smaller surfaces such as upholstery, pet beds and stairs.
- Whole-machine filtration: Captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns for cleaner exhaust air.
- Handheld conversion: Quickly transforms into a handheld vacuum for furniture, cars and above-floor cleaning.
- Hygienic bin emptying: The lever-release system helps empty dust directly into the bin without touching the dirt.
Q: How long does the Dyson V8 run in normal cleaning compared with Max mode?
A: In Powerful mode with a non-motorised tool, the Dyson V8 runs for up to 40 minutes. In Max mode, it runs for up to 5 minutes, so that setting is better for short, stubborn spots rather than a full-home clean.
Q: Is the Dyson V8 suitable for thick carpet and lightweight rugs?
A: It works best across hard floors, low to medium pile carpet and everyday rugs. On very dense carpet or lightweight rugs, the Motorbar head can feel grabby or stop spinning, so it is less suited to plush or delicate floor coverings.
Q: How well does the Dyson V8 handle long hair and pet hair?
A: It is designed for homes with pets and long hair, using a Motorbar cleaner head with de-tangling vanes and a hair screw tool. That helps reduce hair wrapping on the brush bar and makes it better suited to upholstery, stairs and pet beds.
Q: Can the Dyson V8 be used as a handheld vacuum for cars, stairs and furniture?
A: Yes. The Dyson V8 converts to a handheld in one click, which makes it practical for stairs, car interiors, sofas and tight spaces. Its lighter stick format is easier to manoeuvre in small areas than a full-size barrel vacuum.
Q: Is the Dyson V8 powerful enough to replace a full-size vacuum for the whole home?
A: For many small homes, it can handle regular whole-home cleaning, especially on hard floors and standard carpet. If there is a large home, very thick carpet or frequent heavy debris, a larger cordless or full-size vacuum may suit better.
