Different Types of Refrigerators
Refrigerators come in multiple configurations to suit varying household sizes, kitchen layouts, and storage preferences.
French Door Fridges feature double doors for the upper fresh food section with freezer drawers below, offering large capacity and flexible storage for families and entertainers. Side-by-Side Fridges split fresh and frozen storage vertically for simultaneous access to both compartments.
Top Mount Fridges position the freezer above the fresh food section, whilst Bottom Mount Fridges place frozen storage below for eye-level access to frequently used fresh items.
Bar Fridges and Wine Coolers provide specialised beverage storage, whilst Single Door Fridges suit secondary storage in entertaining areas.
Leading brands include LG, Samsung, Hisense, Westinghouse, and Fisher & Paykel across all refrigerator formats.
Refrigerator Features to Consider
Ice Makers and Water Dispensers
Automatic ice makers appear in French door and side-by-side models, eliminating manual ice tray filling. External dispensers provide front access to ice and water, whilst some configurations feature internal ice bins with front water dispensers.
Water-only dispensers appear on selected models and some bottom mount configurations. Most ice and water systems require plumbing connection to mains water supply, though water-only dispensers may operate from internal reservoirs.
Filtered water systems remove impurities and chlorine taste. Some manufacturers integrate ice makers into door cavities rather than freezer compartments to maximise usable storage space.
Variable Temperature Zones
Convertible compartments switch between freezer and fridge temperatures based on storage needs. These zones suit entertaining when additional fresh food space is required, or provide dedicated temperature control for specific items like seafood or deli meats.
French door models frequently include "entertainer's drawers" operating at temperatures between standard fridge and freezer settings. Quad door configurations often dedicate one door to convertible zone access.
Humidity-Controlled Crispers
Adjustable humidity crispers maintain optimal moisture levels for different produce types. High humidity suits leafy vegetables, whilst low humidity prevents condensation on fruits and extends storage duration.
Some premium models include multiple crispers with independent humidity controls, enabling simultaneous storage of vegetables and fruits at their respective ideal conditions.
Smart Connectivity
Wi-Fi-enabled refrigerators connect to smartphone apps for temperature monitoring, door-open alerts, and diagnostic notifications. Some models include internal cameras for viewing contents remotely whilst shopping.
Voice assistant integration enables temperature adjustments and feature control through smart home systems. App-based features may include expiry date tracking and shopping list generation based on removed items.
Energy-Efficient Refrigerator Options
Energy star ratings indicate annual electricity consumption, with higher ratings representing lower running costs. Modern refrigerators achieve 3-6 star ratings depending on capacity, compressor technology, and insulation quality.
Efficiency technologies:
Inverter compressors adjust cooling output based on demand rather than fixed on/off cycling
Multi-airflow systems distribute cold air efficiently throughout compartments
LED lighting consumes minimal power compared to traditional bulb systems
Thick insulation reduces temperature fluctuation and compressor workload
Door seal quality affects cold air retention during opening
Calculate estimated annual costs by checking the energy label's kilowatt-hour figure and multiplying by your electricity rate. Compare models of similar capacity when assessing efficiency—larger refrigerators naturally consume more power regardless of star rating.
Small & Large Refrigerator Sizes and Dimensions
Refrigerator capacity measured in litres indicates total usable storage space across fresh and frozen compartments.
Small (200-350L): 1-2 people, includes compact top mount models
Medium (350-500L): 3-4 people, suits most bottom mount and larger top mount configurations
Large (500-650L): 5+ people or bulk storage, typical French door and side-by-side models
Extra large (650L+): Large families or entertainment-focused households
Automatic ice makers and water dispensers are found in French Door and Side by Side fridges for everyday convenience.
Ice and water are accessible either via a front dispenser like LG’s Side by Side Fridges, or water at the front and the ice in an internal scoop bin like in Fisher & Paykel French Door Fridges. For water only check out Hisense French Door Fridges and selected Bottom Mount Fridges. Most ice and water fridges require a plumber to connect them to your water supply, water-only fridges do not.
For filtered ice and water, look for fridge water filter models such as Electrolux French Door Fridges with front ice and water dispenser or Samsung French Door Fridges. Keep in mind fridges with ice makers can take up space, so to get around this some brands their ice systems built into the doors to not compromise on storage.
The main difference between these fridges is the layout. French Door has the fridge above the freezer with either two freezer doors containing clear compartments or one freezer drawer with stacked pull out baskets. Some even have a second drawer known as the “entertainer’s drawer” for storing seafood or smallgoods at just the right temperature.
Fisher & Paykel coined the term Quad Door for their four door French Door fridges. Many French Door fridges come with four doors, with frozen goods seen instantly in compartments and often one door gives access to a convertible freezer to fridge variable temperature zone to refrigerate items as required.
Side by Side Fridges have the fridge on one side and freezer on the other, perfect for accessing fresh and frozen goods simultaneously. However unlike French Door fridges they are usually without convertible zones.
