How to choose headphones and soundbars on sale

When you're choosing audio, how and where you listen is the first decision, because it shapes the type: over-ear headphones suit home listening, travel and remote work, in-ear and true wireless earbuds suit sport and commuting, and a soundbar improves TV audio.

Once the type is settled, compare the features that matter for it: battery life, Bluetooth version and noise cancellation for headphones, and HDMI eARC, Dolby Atmos and a separate subwoofer for soundbars.

Headphones on sale by type

Headphone type determines how the product is worn, how it performs and where it suits daily use. The main headphone types at The Good Guys are over-ear, on-ear, in-ear and true wireless, and over-ear and on-ear headphones are mostly weighed on comfort, sound and budget.

Type

How it works

Suited to

Over-ear headphones

The ear cup sits fully around the ear.

A fully enclosed ear cup gives immersive sound, and many models add active noise cancellation. Well suited to home listening sessions, remote work and travel.

On-ear headphones

The ear cup rests on top of the ear instead of surrounding it.

Typically lighter and more compact than over-ear models, suited to commuting and everyday portable use.

In-ear headphones

A corded or neckband format that fits inside the ear canal.

Lighter and more portable than over-ear, suited to sport, exercise and daily commuting.

True wireless earbuds

No cable between the two earbuds.

Fully wireless design suits sport, exercise, commuting and everyday use. Battery life typically ranges from 5 to 12 hours per charge, with the charging case providing multiple additional charges.

By connection and use, wired headphones suit listeners prioritising audio quality at lower price points, wireless headphones cover everyday use with Bluetooth connectivity, and sports headphones suit running and gym use with sweat-resistant ratings and secure fit.

Noise cancellation (ANC) is the feature to compare when choosing headphones for travel or open-plan use. Active noise cancellation electronically reduces ambient sound, while passive isolation relies on the physical seal of the ear cup or tip. Most current ANC models from Sony use a combination of both. ANC is most effective at reducing consistent low-frequency noise like aircraft engines and traffic.

Headphone features to compare

Beyond type and noise cancellation, several features affect day-to-day use and sound quality. The right combination depends on whether the headphones are primarily for music, calls, exercise or travel.

Battery life depends on the type: over-ear models typically run 30 to 40 hours per charge, while true wireless earbuds run 5 to 12 hours per charge, with the case providing 2 to 4 additional charges.

Bluetooth 5.0 and above offers improved range, lower latency and multi-device pairing, which lets you switch between a phone and a laptop without manually re-pairing. Codec support also matters, as aptX, LDAC and AAC codecs deliver higher quality audio over Bluetooth than the default SBC codec, and support varies by both headphone and source device.

For exercise, IPX4 or higher is rated for sweat and rain resistance. For calls and video conferencing, microphone quality is important, and multi-microphone arrays with noise reduction are common on premium ANC models.

Soundbars on sale and home theatre

A soundbar improves television audio without the complexity and space requirements of a multi-speaker surround sound system.

The format ranges from compact single-bar models to full Dolby Atmos configurations with separate subwoofers and rear speakers. Budget soundbars from JBL cover stereo and 2.1 configurations, suited to bedrooms and smaller living rooms where the priority is improving TV audio over the built-in speakers. Mid-range and premium soundbars from Sony, Samsung and Sonos add Dolby Atmos, eARC, wireless rear speakers and multi-room support. Across these formats, soundbars come in four main configurations:

Configuration

What it includes

Suited to

Stereo soundbars

Two-channel models

Bedrooms and smaller living spaces where basic audio improvement is the goal

2.1 soundbars

A separate wireless subwoofer for deeper bass response

Living rooms where the built-in speaker output of a flat TV is insufficient

Dolby Atmos soundbars

Multi-dimensional audio using upward-firing speakers to create a height effect

Dedicated home cinema setups and larger living rooms with good acoustic space

Full surround configurations

A soundbar paired with a subwoofer and two rear speakers

A 5.1 surround setup

Comparing these features across soundbars on sale makes it easier to choose the soundbar that suits your room. HDMI eARC passes higher-quality audio signals including Dolby Atmos from a compatible TV, so check the TV has an eARC-compatible HDMI port. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi streaming play music directly from a phone or via streaming services without going through the TV.

Wireless rear speakers add surround sound without running cables across the room. Multi-room audio, available on Sonos and selected Samsung models, allows the soundbar to sync with other speakers in the home, and built-in smart-assistant support on selected models allows voice control for playback and smart home functions.

Steps to buying headphones or a soundbar

Five checks narrow down which headphones or soundbar to buy in the sale:

  1. Identify your primary use: noise cancellation for travel or open-plan work, sport fit for exercise, soundbar for TV audio improvement, multi-room for whole-home audio.

  2. Choose headphone type: over-ear for best ANC and immersive listening, in-ear for portability, true wireless for everyday wireless use.

  3. Compare battery life (headphones) and connectivity options (soundbars: HDMI eARC, optical, Bluetooth).

  4. Check multi-room compatibility if integrating with existing wireless speakers.

  5. Order online for delivery or Click & Collect from your nearest The Good Guys store.

Frequently asked questions

Noise-cancelling headphones, true wireless earbuds and Dolby Atmos soundbars all feature in the Black Friday headphone sale in November, the Boxing Day headphone sale in late December and the EOFY sale. When a newer release supersedes a model, the previous version can drop in price.

Soundbars have their own Black Friday soundbar sale, and headphones make an easy gift for an audio fan in the Christmas gift ideas.

Value depends on how you listen. Over-ear noise-cancelling models such as the Sony WH-1000XM series suit travel and home listening, true wireless earbuds such as the Sony WF series and Samsung Galaxy Buds suit everyday use, and Skullcandy offers everyday wireless headphones for sport and casual listening.

Checking the connection type (wired or wireless) and battery life alongside noise cancellation is a useful way to compare across price points.

A separate subwoofer noticeably improves low-end performance over what a standalone soundbar can produce, particularly for movies and music with deep bass. Many premium soundbars from Sony, Samsung and Sonos come with a wireless subwoofer, and matched-brand subwoofer pairings are also widely available for standalone soundbars.

Room size matters: in smaller living rooms under 25 square metres, a soundbar with built-in down-firing subwoofers can be sufficient. For dedicated home cinema setups in larger rooms, adding a subwoofer alongside rear surround speakers creates a surround sound setup.

Many headphones and soundbars are eligible for Click & Collect at checkout, or can be sent by small-item home delivery with delivery confirmed before you pay. Larger home theatre systems may be treated as big and bulky delivery items, depending on the system's size. Installation for soundbars is available as an add-on through sound installations.
