Kitchen In Focus: Style Secrets From TV’s The Block

May 1, 2023 – 4 min read

Blending practicality, polish and panache, this kitchen is a literal scene-stealer. Created by leading kitchen manufacturer Kinsman, with an array of the latest cooking and dishwasher appliances, the space took out top prize in “Kitchen Week” on The Block in 2023. The dreamy country-meets-coastal aesthetic and ultrafunctional design dazzled the show’s judges.

Kitchen Design Inspiration

“We wanted our kitchen to be an absolute standout; to be the heart and soul of the house,” says contestant Kirsty, who created the winning room with her partner, Jesse. “We wanted it to feel homely and be the kind of space where you can imagine hosting lots of great family and friend dinners.”

Mission accomplished. In fact, it’s a kitchen that wouldn’t be out of place in a stately Hamptons holiday home, and it exudes warmth and character at every turn. Read on for style secrets from The Block’s winning kitchen…

The Cabinetry

The breakout star of the space is the navy joinery: a classic choice, albeit with a contemporary twist. “It’s absolutely gorgeous – I’d never seen cabinetry in that colour before so it immediately stood out,” says Kirsty of Kinsman’s new Montauk Ink Matt cabinetry, accompanied by Federation Capping and Decorative Pilaster Blocks in the same matt blue hue.

Shaker-profile 40mm cabinet doors fit the traditional aesthetic, with Brass Patina Mesh door panels on the overhead glassware cupboards delivering a hint of glamour.

“This kitchen is a lesson in combining storage with style,” says Alisa Fraser, Kinsman ambassador and former The Block contestant. “The cabinetry keeps clutter out of sight and integrates large appliances, all the while making a case for using colour in the kitchen.”

The Appliances

A cutting-edge kitchen needs to be kitted out with the latest and greatest appliances, and Kirsty and Jesse’s space delivers in spades. Double ovens and a five-burner cooktop make family meals and larger gatherings a breeze, while the dishwasher and rangehood are cleverly concealed behind cabinetry.

The selection of Bosch appliances are high quality and user-friendly – they might have starred on a top-rating TV show but, in reality, they’re about making life easier.

The Fixtures And Finishes

A sumptuous marble-look benchtop – Caesarstone Aterra Blanca – tops the kitchen counters, serving as a light and bright foil to the dark-toned cabinetry. A bespoke brass inlay adds a level of sophistication to the bench, and ties in tonally with the cabinetry handles and hardware (Kinsman’s new Barrington Knobs with Backing Plate in Matt Brass and Barrington Cup Pull in Matt Brass). “The knobs and pulls are new to Kinsman and make the cabinetry absolutely pop,” says Kirsty.

Meanwhile, a deep sink is paired with a sleek gooseneck tap, both chosen to stand the test of time. For a similar look, try the Oliveri Essente Goose Neck Pull Out Mixer Gold and the Oliveri Grand Bowl Undermount Sink.

The Special Touches

Beyond the flawless functionality of Kirsty and Jesse’s kitchen, dazzling design details create a space with the X-factor. Take the arched bar off to one side – an entertainer’s dream stocked with ample wine storage below.

Continuing that theme, every shelf, drawer and cupboard is thoughtfully fitted out with organisational accessories, including Cutlery Trays, Internal Drawers and Cross Wire Rails for Pot Drawers, all from Kinsman. The main kitchen also flows into a spacious butler’s pantry, where more Bosch appliances are joined by a second sink, plus purple gingham wallpaper for a splash of colour.
