How To Install A Dishwasher
February 16, 2023-4 min read
Just snapped up a new dishwasher (or about to) and planning to install it yourself to save some pennies? The good news is switching out a tired old unit for a more efficient new model is a relatively simple job – especially if you already have power, water and drainage set up in your kitchen.
“You’ll need a professional to install a built-in or an integrated dishwasher to ensure it’s done safely and without damaging your bench, cupboards, or the dishwasher itself,” explains Tania Grillinzoni, The Good Guys Buyer – Cooking and Dishwashers.“But installing an under bench or a freestanding dishwasher in an existing space is a relatively easy DIY job.”
Want to know how? Follow our step-by-step guide to dishwasher installation and get that sparkling new dishwasher up and running in time for the next dinner clean-up! No plumber required.
How To Measure For A New Dishwasher
Time to rewind a bit! The last thing you want is to get caught out with a new dishwasher that doesn’t fit. “Accurately measuring your dishwasher cavity is crucial before you start shopping for the right appliance,” says Tania Grillinzoni. “First, measure the height, width and depth of your space, and note down the measurements. Then repeat the process to double-check your data!”
Next, consider how you’ll bring your new dishwasher into your home. Will it be via the front or back door? Do you have any hallways or corners it will need to pass through? Measure those, too!

What You’ll Need To Install A Dishwasher Yourself
Fancy yourself a bit of a tradie? To install a new dishwasher in an existing cavity yourself, you’ll need the following tools:
Drill or screwdriver
Pair of pliers
Duct tape (in case you want to make a connection a little more secure)
Paper towel or mop (to clean any spills)
Sheet or piece of cardboard from the dishwasher box (to protect your floors - and your knees!).
How To Install A Dishwasher In 12 Steps
Turn off your water supply (at the valve under your kitchen sink) and switch off power at your circuit breaker.
Check your new dishwasher’s installation guide and adhere to any instructions that are specific to your model.
Lay the dishwasher on its back close to where you will install it to easily access the water inlet and drain hoses and connect your power wires.
Using a drill or screwdriver, remove the screw next to the power box and take off the lid.
Review your instruction manual to confirm how to connect the power inside the box, secure the wiring as per the instructions, then close and secure the lid.
Check your existing water hose and ensure it’s not too old, damaged or cracked – replacing it now will save you a hassle later on.
Once satisfied with your water hose, attach it to your appliance and ensure it’s on tight.
Secure the drain hose attached to your new dishwasher to your sink tail pipe. Ensure the hose is elevated right before its connection to the pipe – use the supplied U-bend to loop it up and over in an arch.
Turn the dishwasher right side up, and slowly and gently position it into the cavity.
Adjust the feet with a pair of pliers to ensure your dishwasher is stable, level and at the right height.
Switch the power and water supply back on, and check for any leaks.
Run a first cycle to ensure your dishwasher is working, and check again for any leaks.
Discreet Dishwashers
Got your heart set on a seamless new kitchen with a dishwasher that gets on with the job, without being in the spotlight? Consider a sleek, integrated dishwasher that can snugly sync with your design style. Or a built-in model that performs its duties while tucked neatly behind a cupboard door.
“Integrated and built-in dishwashers make a superstylish and modern closing statement to any new kitchen reno, but do keep in mind that you’ll need to have them installed by a qualified professional, such as a plumber, to ensure it’s all done properly and safely,” says Tania Grillinzoni.
