Washing machine drum sizes for each household in the sale

Capacity is the first check: a small machine suits singles and couples, a medium to large machine suits a family of four, and a large machine suits households that regularly wash bulky items like doonas and towels.

Load type is the second: front loaders use less water, are gentler on fabrics and can be stacked with a dryer, while top loaders complete cycles faster, allow loading without bending down and are generally cheaper at entry level.

Capacity determines how many kilograms of laundry a machine handles per cycle, so the right size avoids running multiple loads or paying for more machine than you need. Washing machines at The Good Guys fall into three broad capacity categories.

Capacity category

Drum size

Best suited to

Small washing machines

Up to 6kg

Singles, couples or households of one to two people with lighter laundry, around 5 outfits or towels per load

Medium washing machines

7 to 8kg

Small families or households of three to four people, around 7 outfits or towels per load

Large washing machines

9kg and above

Larger households of five or more, families with children, or regular washing of bulky items like doonas and towels, with room for 8 or more outfits or towels per load

The best washing machines for big families offer larger capacities with smart features. An 8kg drum handles standard weekly loads from a family of four without splitting cycles, while 10kg is the more practical choice for households that regularly wash bulky items like doonas. Singles and couples can generally manage with a small machine without running partial loads.

Should you choose a front load or top load washing machine?

Load type decides how a washing machine fits your laundry space and how it uses water and energy, so choosing between front and top load depends on your space and how you do laundry.

Most front load washing machines use a tumbling action that is gentler on fabrics and typically uses less water per cycle than top loaders. They can be stacked with a compatible dryer using stacking and venting kits, which suits smaller laundry spaces where floor area is limited. Some front load models also include steam functions that help lift stubborn stains, one reason buyers switch to a front loader washing machine.

Where easy loading matters, top load washing machines allow loading without bending down and typically complete cycles faster than equivalent front loaders. They are generally lower-priced at entry level and do not require a door seal, which removes one potential maintenance point over time.

Features to look for in washing machine deals

Detergent dosing is handled by auto-dosing washing machines, which measure and dispense the correct amount of laundry detergent automatically based on load size. This reduces detergent waste and removes the guesswork from each wash. Auto-dosing is available on mid-range and premium models from brands including Samsung and Miele.

For apartments or homes without space for two separate appliances, washer dryer combos combine both functions in a single unit. Combo units trade some drying capacity for a single footprint: most combos wash up to 10kg but dry around 6kg, so check the drying drum size alongside the wash capacity before buying.

Wash programmes come first: look for Quick, Eco, Hand Wash and Delicate cycles as a minimum. Higher spin speed, typically 1,200 to 1,600 rpm, removes more moisture before drying, which can shorten dryer time, and models rated below 70dB (measured in decibels) during spin are generally considered quiet.

Delay start lets you schedule a wash to start when you choose, such as during off-peak electricity periods, and a steam function, available on selected front loaders, helps address stains without pre-soaking.

The label shows both the WELS water rating and the energy star rating, which let you compare machines of a similar capacity, including when replacing an ageing machine.

How to buy a washing machine on sale

  1. Measure your laundry space, including door swing for front loaders and overhead clearance for top loaders.

  2. Choose capacity by household weekly load: a small machine for couples, a medium to large one for families.

  3. Decide front load versus top load: front loaders are gentler on fabrics and typically use less water, top loaders are typically faster and have higher starting capacities.

  4. Check key features: spin speed (1,200rpm or higher for faster drying), energy and water rating, auto-dosing, steam programmes and Wi-Fi.

  5. Old-machine removal can be arranged at checkout, and installation is available as an add-on.

Compact and mini washing machines are eligible for Click & Collect or small-item delivery, subject to availability at your local store. Full-size washing machines are typically delivered as big and bulky delivery items, as they are large and heavy.

Delivery includes placement at point of use, and old appliance removal can be arranged at checkout. Installation is available as an add-on, including the plumbing connection by a licensed installer, through the laundry installation service, with pricing based on your location.
