Steal The Style: Is This Australia’s Coolest Kitchen?

May 2, 2022 - 3 min read

Equal parts practicality and designer dash, the newly finished kitchen of Channel Nine TV presenter Allison Langdon is a feast for the eyes. Created by leading kitchen designer Kinsman, Allison’s contemporary coastal kitchen is a lesson in how family-friendly design can also be cool. Read on for the must-have cooking and dishwasher appliances, fixtures and finishes you need to steal Allison’s style for your own kitchen reno or new build.

Contemporary open plan kitchen with white cabinetry and a central island bench topped with grey marble.

The Appliances

In Allison’s kitchen, double wall-mounted ILVE ovens make it easy to cook for larger gatherings and get food in and out of the ovens at a workable height. The French door fridge with its narrow doors improves flow, while the induction cooktop with gas hob provides the best of both worlds. The dishwasher and microwave are hidden behind the island, creating a perfectly flowing space with different zones for cooking and washing up.

When designing a new kitchen, appliance selection should come first. “Choosing your oven, cooktop, rangehood, sink and tapware before fully designing your kitchen allows you to find the perfect appliances for your needs without compromising or missing out due to measurement and layout requirements or restrictions,” says Geraldine Gillespie, The Good Guys Buyer – Cooking, Dishwashers and Kitchenware.

Appliance choice comes down to the space you have available, as well as personal taste. “Some people love the look of large European Deluxe Cookers to meet their style needs, while others won’t have the width for a French door fridge and have to compromise. Look at your space and choose the appliances that work best for you,” Geraldine says.

Steal The Style

Plates and bowls are easily seen from all angles in a glass sided kitchen drawer, part of the Kinsman design.

The Layout

Allison’s kitchen was designed to enhance workflow. Kinsman ambassador and former winner of The Block, Alisa Fraser says the central island bench allows multiple family members to move around the kitchen at the same time without getting in each other’s way. “This layout makes a big difference to how a kitchen operates. You can have one person prepping on the island, another person cooking on the stove or using the ovens along the back, and someone going to the fridge or pantries without fuss,” Alisa says.

Two double pantries were placed at each end of the kitchen, with dry foods conveniently stored next to the fridge to make it easy to grab all the ingredients at once. Drinks storage is hidden behind pantry doors at the other end. “Walk-in pantries are great, but they’re not compulsory, especially when you don’t have the space,” Alisa says.

The curved table at one end of the 4.1m-long island is an inviting spot for family members to gather, eat, drink and entertain guests. “It definitely is a kitchen for entertaining. The island is huge, so it’s a comfortable place to sit and chat with family or friends while you’re cooking,” Alisa says.

The Cabinetry

Kinsman’s Montauk Classic White Matt cabinetry is a stand-out feature. “It has a thin profile, so it’s more of a contemporary take on the traditional Shaker style,” Alisa says. The groove panelling on the island and decorative rangehood adds an element of coastal appeal, with Kinsman’s Avoca profile achieving a similar look. “It’s friendly and inviting and very on-trend at the moment.”

The use of these two different profiles in the same colour adds interest to the space without clashing or overdoing it. “It’s a bit more unique, and when you pull it off, it looks amazing,” Alisa says.

“This layout makes a big difference to how a kitchen operates. You can have one person prepping on the island, another person cooking on the stove or using the ovens along the back, and someone going to the fridge or pantries without fuss”

The Finishes

Adding wow-factor is the striking marble-look stone bench that drapes over the front of the island. For a similar finish, try Kinsman’s Caesarstone benchtop in Noble Grey. Or for a darker and more dramatic tone, try Kinsman’s Caesarstone benchtop in Turbine Grey. “Using the same stone on your splashback is a very sophisticated touch,” Alisa says.

The Details

An undermount sink, similar to the Hafele Squareline Double Bowl Sink, keeps the benchtop looking clean and stylish and allows you to hide dirty dishes until they’re ready for cleaning.

The square gooseneck mixer (get the look with the Oliveri Stainless Pull Out Square Gooseneck Mixer) matches the overall contemporary aesthetic.
