Is It Time To Upgrade Your TV?

May 16, 2023 – 5 min read

TVs are an incredible window into worlds and adventures you can only dream of. They’re an escape, a reality check, a ticket to the game, and a teacher. But, like all things, televisions don’t last forever, and we spend too much time in front of them to settle for anything less than great. Whether you’re looking for an excuse to upgrade to the latest smart TV, or have a sneaking suspicion that your current model might be on its last legs, here’s what to look for when looking for your next bigger and better TV.

Warning Signs That Your TV Is On The Way Out

There are a lot of warning signs when your TV is starting to die, some of which are technology specific. “The biggest sign is that the picture just doesn’t look that good anymore,” says John Milonas, The Good Guys Buyer – Televisions and Accessories.

“Maybe the colours are looking dim, flat, washed out, or plain wrong. Perhaps the brightness is way too low no matter how much you adjust it, or the TV takes too long to become bright. There could also be lines, dead pixels, overly bright sections of pixels, flashing, or it’s become blurry/ fuzzy.”

These are signs that the pixels/colour bulbs are dying on an LED TV (most TVs from the last decade are LED), and unless caught very early in its decline, it’s often impossible or impractical to repair, given the problem is with the most expensive part of the TV.

If the TV is taking a very long time to turn on or ‘heat up’, then it could be due to a dying power source or capacitor. While old CRT TVs sometimes needed time to warm up, LED TVs should be instant.

Another warning sign is when your TV doesn’t do exactly what you want it to do. Maybe you want to take advantage of everything the new Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles have to offer with 4K picture and HDMI 2.1?

Or do you want smart features built in so you can watch Netflix and catch-up services? Perhaps you want something a little bigger?

Considerations When Shopping For A New TV

The first thing you need to work out is how big you want to go. If it’s been a while since you last bought a TV, chances are you can now get a much bigger set.

The higher definition a TV is, the better the image, meaning you can sit closer to a larger screen to get the full effect. If you’re getting a 4K TV, then you can happily sit 1.8m from a 65” TV; 2.2m from a 75” TV and 3,2m from a 85” TV. You can go even bigger if you get an 8K TV.

The other thing to consider is how bright your room is, which can change throughout the day. If you have a very bright room, then you need TV technology that can still maintain colour and contrast, like QLED and QNED.

“Also consider what you want to do with the TV,” says John Milonas. “Are there any apps or streaming services that are especially important to you? Do you or will you have the latest gaming consoles? And is there a particular kind of content you watch more of?”

New Innovations In TVs

Most TVs have 4K HDR these days. 4K refers to the resolution (the earlier ‘Full HD’ was 1080p) and is four times higher resolution than Full HD. Then there’s 8K, which is four times better again.

HDR refers to high dynamic range – the technology that improves the colour and contrast of the image – and the difference between SDR and HDR is mind blowing.

From there the main new technological innovations are HDR10+ versus Dolby Vision (the two different flavours of HDR), and Dolby Atmos, which simulates the surround sound of multiple speakers instead of the traditional five.

How To Buy The Best TV

The LG 65" OLED EVO C4 4K Smart TV 24 range is legendary amongst gamers and tech nerds for its black blacks, vibrant colours and fast response. This is the model of TV that many of the local video game reviewers use to test games on – it’s that good.

If you’re on a smaller budget, it’s hard to go past TCL’s TV range. TCL specialises in making the screens for a lot of other brands, so the company knows what it’s doing. If you’re looking for a great value 4K TV, check out the TCL 55" C655 QLED Google TV 24.

Hacks And Advice

The best TV hack is getting a sound bar. TVs are great at showing you a beautiful picture, but those thin bodies just aren’t ideal for giving you the best audio experience. A good soundbar makes it easier to hear every word, and can make you feel like you’re a part of the action. If you’re looking for one that will transform your movie nights, the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 takes sound to a whole new level.
