Great grinder with a few minor setbacks
Love the grinder. It's compact, quiet, and allows quite precise fine-tuning on the grind settings. The only minor annoyances are that it's a little awkward to use the single-dose hopper without spilling a few beans and that quite a lot of grounds get stuck in the grinder and fall out in clumps next time you use it. You can sort of use the single-dose hopper as a makeshift bellows to clear it out, but it's a bit finicky

Great budget grinder
The Baratza Encore ESP Pro is an excellent entry-level grinder, perfectly suited for individuals seeking a more interactive coffee preparation experience. Its stepless adjustment mechanism offers precise control, and the internal burrs can be cleaned with remarkable ease without compromising the grind setting. The option to utilize a bean hopper is a valuable feature. Furthermore, the single-dosing lid also functions as a bellows, and grind retention is minimal.

At a glance
The Baratza Encore ESP Pro is a home coffee grinder built for people who want better control across espresso and filter brewing. Its key strengths are precise grind adjustment, dual timer or auto-stop dosing, and cleaner grinding with anti-static tech. It is especially well suited to home baristas, though it does not offer the larger burr sets or heavier-duty build found on more premium specialist grinders.

Things to consider
It offers strong precision for home use, but premium or specialist grinders may provide larger burrs, quieter operation and a more heavy-duty build for frequent back-to-back grinding.
Grind consistency score
8.7/10 - Strong consistency for a home grinder, with stepless espresso adjustment and conical burrs that suit both espresso and filter brewing.
Home barista suitability
Very good for home baristas wanting espresso precision plus flexibility for pour-over, batch brew and cold brew.
Ease of cleaning
8.5/10 - Quick-release burr access and anti-static design make routine cleaning more straightforward than many entry-level grinders.
Noise level rating
6.8/10 - Reasonable for a home grinder, but not as quiet as some more premium low-noise alternatives.
Key benefits
- Stepless micro-adjustment: Gives you near-infinite control in the espresso range so you can fine-tune extraction more precisely than standard stepped grinders.
- 20 grind settings with 40 micro options: Makes it easier to move from fine espresso to coarser brew methods while still allowing detailed flavour adjustment.
- 0.1-second timer: Supports repeatable dosing with fine time control for more consistent daily grinding.
- Auto-stop grinding mode: Simplifies single-dose workflows so you can grind without needing to stop the machine manually.
- 40 mm M2 conical burrs: Designed to deliver reliable grind performance across espresso and brew coffee in a compact home format.
- Quick-release burr system: Helps make routine cleaning and bean changes easier, which is useful for households switching between roast styles.
- Anti-static ioniser technology: Reduces stray grounds on the bench for a tidier coffee-making routine.
- Dual hopper workflow support: Adds flexibility for users who want to alternate between full-bean storage and single-dose use.
Q: Is this grinder suitable for daily espresso dial-in at home
A: Yes. The Encore ESP Pro is built for home espresso tuning, with 20 main settings and 40 micro adjustments to refine extraction. It suits daily home use, but it is not aimed at heavy back-to-back grinding in a commercial setting.
Q: Can it also grind for plunger, filter and cold brew
A: Yes. Baratza Encore ESP Pro covers fine espresso through to coarser brew methods, so one grinder can handle plunger, pour over, filter and cold brew. It is a flexible home option if different people in the house brew coffee different ways.
Q: Does timed grinding help with repeatable doses for espresso
A: Yes. Timed grinding can be set down to 0.1 second, which makes it easier to repeat a dose once the grind is dialled in. Auto-stop is also useful if you prefer a simpler workflow, though bean changes can still affect the result in the cup.
Q: How messy is the Encore ESP Pro on the benchtop
A: Baratza Encore ESP Pro uses anti-static ion generation to reduce stray grounds during grinding. That helps keep the bench tidier than a grinder without anti-static control, but it does not mean every last ground is contained after each dose.
Q: Is it easy to clean when changing between different beans
A: Yes. The 40mm M2 conical burr has a quick-release design, so routine access is simpler when cleaning or swapping beans. Like most home grinders, it can still hold some residual coffee inside, so a brief clean-out helps when changing roast styles.
