What you need to know about eSIMs

August 28, 2025-4 min read

Ever returned from a trip abroad only to find a mammoth-sized phone bill waiting for you? Juggled two phones for work and your personal life? Or struggled with swapping tiny SIM cards? That’s exactly why eSIMs are becoming the go-to solution for modern mobile users.

“There’s no doubt that eSIMs are the future,” says John Wong, The Good Guys Buyer – Mobiles and Plans. “What makes eSIMs such a game changer is the technology behind them. Because the SIM is embedded directly into the device’s chipset, you can safely download and switch between different mobile carrier plans wirelessly and manage everything digitally.”

Whether you’re wondering what an eSIM is, how it works or if your device supports one, this guide answers the most commonly asked questions about eSIMs, helping you decide if it’s time to make the switch. Here’s what you need to know...

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (short for embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that’s built directly into your device. Unlike a traditional SIM card, you don’t need to insert or replace any plastic and your mobile plan can be downloaded straight onto the eSIM.

How does an eSIM work?

It works the same way as a traditional SIM card, storing your mobile network details and giving you access to calls, texts and data – but without the physical card.

“Think of it as similar to the switch from DVDs to streaming,” explains John Wong. “Instead of needing a physical disc to watch your favourite movie, everything is stored digitally and accessed instantly. With an eSIM, your phone can connect to networks seamlessly, without the need for swapping out cards, so you’ll enjoy more flexibility and convenience.”

Does an eSIM work overseas?

Yes! One of the biggest advantages of using an eSIM is how easily you can switch from making calls in Australia to using data abroad. Instead of having to hunt for a local SIM card and paying expensive roaming fees, you can change to an international data plan before you even leave home (this can be through your service provider). Once you land, simply select the travel eSIM as your active service. And just like that, you’ll have instant access to data and a reliable signal, keeping you connected for maps, messages and booking updates.

How do you activate an eSIM?

Activating an eSIM is quick and convenient – but before you get started, you’ll need to ask yourself, “Is my phone eSIM compatible?”. Whether you’re using a Telstra eSIM or one from another provider, the process is simple: Once you’ve purchased a plan from your carrier or an eSIM provider, you’ll typically receive a QR code or activation link. Scan the code or click the link, follow the prompts, and your eSIM will be ready to use within minutes. Each service provider and phone type will have slightly different steps for setting up your eSIM.

“If you’re wondering how to activate an eSIM on an iPhone, all it takes is a few easy steps,” says John Wong. “Simply open Settings, head to Mobile, then under SIMs click Add eSIM and you’ll be on your way to being instantly connected!”

Can you have two phone numbers with an eSIM?

With an eSIM, you can easily manage two phone numbers on a single device ‒ perfect for keeping your personal and work lines separate without having to carry two phones. Many smartphones now support dual SIMs, allowing you to use a physical SIM alongside an eSIM, or even multiple eSIM profiles depending on your phone's make and model.

Can you connect an iPad to an eSIM?

Many recent iPad models support eSIM but if you have a standard model, you’ll need a 7th generation or newer. If your iPad is eSIM compatible, you can connect directly to mobile data without needing a physical sim. Maybe you’re out of range of the Wi-Fi, working remotely, or travelling overseas – with an eSIM on your iPad you can stay online easily. “It’s not just iPads, eSIMs work with wearables like smartwatches too,” says John Wong. “And if you upgrade your phone, moving your plan is pretty easy – most carriers let you transfer your profile in just a few steps. So, if you’re asking how to transfer your eSIM to a new iPhone, you can usually do it in Settings or through the carrier’s app.”

Will my network be compatible?

Before you think about switching to an eSIM, it’s important to check if your network supports it. In Australia, most major carriers including Telstra, Optus and Vodafone offer eSIM-compatible plans for your smartphone. Once you’ve confirmed your network’s compatibility, all you need to do is simply activate your eSIM.
