Spring Clean With This Ultimate Battle Plan To Ditch The Dirt!

June 27, 2022 - 3 min read

That sound? That’s your winter-worn home crying out for some TLC after getting you through the long, cold months, while you were sleeping-in, sofa snacking and watching the odd dust bunny roll by. Time to rev up that vacuum! Spring is in the air!

“We recommend a top to toe spring clean of your home every 2–3 months,” says professional cleaner Delah Gomasi of Maid For You. “Otherwise, unseen dirt and grime quickly builds up and your house can acquire an odour that your nose becomes accustomed to.”

With Delah’s help, we’ve plotted the perfect spring-cleaning action plan for sparkling windows, dust-free surfaces and floors you can eat off. Plus the coolest hacks and mightiest vacuums and steam mops to have your house looking good again – from the inside-out!

Before You Start Your Spring Clean

“Having a set spring-cleaning routine makes it so much easier to clean your home properly and regularly,” says Delah. Let’s go!

  • Assemble cleaning equipment and products. You’ll need glass cleaner, disinfectant, multipurpose spray, floor cleaner, bicarbonate of soda and distilled white vinegar, microfibre cloths for each room, vacuum, mop, grout cleaning brush, clean sponges, gloves and empty garbage bags.
  • Remove clutter from each room so you’re thoroughly cleaning every area and not just around specific spots.
  • Pop on a pair of wireless earphones and fire up your favourite cleaning-anthems playlist to help you  whiz through the work!

How To Approach Your Spring Clean

  • Clean in a clockwise fashion around each room, from top to bottom, with a microfibre cloth and multipurpose spray, and wipe down all surfaces. Don’t neglect crevices and corners, cobwebs or wall marks.
  • Pay attention to high-touch areas like light switches, electric sockets, door frames and handles.
  • Next, vacuum the floors (switch to a brush attachment for tricky edges and corners). Shift big furniture to clean the floor beneath.
  • Finally, mop or better still,  steam mop all hard floors, finishing where you started cleaning so you don’t miss any spots (and your feet stay dry!). “Other than a vacuum, the one cleaning appliance I can’t live without is a steam mop. Nothing gets deeper into surfaces and loosens dirt and dust like it,” says Delah. Just avoid using your steam mop on unsealed flooring and soft plastic surfaces.

Your Spring-Clean Battle Plan

Now for that room-by-room, spring-cleaning checklist list. Let the cleaning begin!

Kitchen Checklist

  • Spray an oven cleaner on your oven interior and leave it to do its work. Use a drop cloth or newspaper layers to protect surfaces from chemical damage. Or avoid this job entirely and upgrade to a self-cleaning pyrolytic oven!
  • Remove countertop clutter, such as keys and papers, and throw out expired food from the pantry, fridge and freezer.
  • Get all the dirty jobs out of the way first, leaving surfaces and floors forl last.
  • Clean fridge shelves, drawers, sides and seals.
  • For a speedier microwave clean (and a fresh-smelling appliance), cook a lemon in water in a microwave-safe bowl for 2–3 minutes to loosen stubborn food stains. Then wipe clean.
  • Finish your oven clean, then move onto the cooktop and rangehood. For greasy cooktop grates and rangehood filters, remove and soak for 30 minutes in hot water and detergent, then scrub until the grease is gone.
  • Don’t forget to clean your hard-working dishwasher! Fill a dishwasher-safe bowl with 1 cup of white vinegar, place in the bottom of the empty machine and run a hot cycle.

Bathroom Checklist

  • Empty your waste bin, then clean the bin outside and inside. Crack down on unhygienic, overflowing bin liners with a self-sealing smart bin for clean, hands-free disposal.
  • Pre-treat the toilet with toilet cleaner and rinse after you’ve cleaned floors (keep the lid down as flushing releases a germ bomb!).
  • Use a grout brush to scrub between shower tiles. Remove limescale and soap scum on the showerhead by filling a plastic zip-lock bag with vinegar and tying it to your shower head. Soak for 30 minutes.
  • Don’t neglect the shower drain either. Wear gloves and get down in there to clear any blockages.
  • Clean mirrors, shelves, windows and window frames (they’re magnets for mould and mildew).
  • Wipe sink, taps and around vanity. Use bicarb soda and vinegar to clean drains, then turn on the hot water tap to rinse.
  • Change gloves to avoid cross-contamination.

  • Vacuum and dust ceiling fans and light fixtures. Hot tip: Use a lint roller for curtains and lampshades!
  • Remake your bed with clean bedlinen; maybe treat yourself to a fresh new set!
