August 11, 2023 - 3 min read

Go pro this spring-cleaning season with smart appliances that do the heavy lifting for you ‒ and expert spring-cleaning tips to ensure sparkling results. Now is the perfect time to put your stick vac to the test!

“We recommend a top-to-toe spring-clean of your home every two to three months,” says professional cleaner and MaidForYou founder Delah Gomasi. “Otherwise, unseen dirt and grime quickly build up, and your house can acquire an odour that your nose becomes accustomed to.”

With help from Delah, we’ve plotted the perfect spring-cleaning action plan. Plus, we’ll share the coolest spring-cleaning hacks and recommend the best vacuums and other essential tech to have your house looking good again – from the inside out.

Best Floorcare For Your Spring-Clean

The latest stick vacuums are the ultimate floor-cleaning gadgets. Look for LG stick vacs that feature a spinning hot mop to vacuum and polish floors at the same time. Plus, LG’s ThinQ app on your smartphone will alert you when the filter is full or the battery is charged and ready to go. Dyson stick vacuums also wash floors as well as they bust dust, and come with detangling and smart brush heads that adapt to different floor types. “There’s even a Dyson vacuum with a sensor to count the number of dust particles you’ve sucked up and display a live feed on an in-built LCD screen – so you can clean the floor and keep score,” says Nick Trajkovski, The Good Guys Buyer – Floorcare.

Pro Cleaning Tips

Whether you are keen to save time or want to get the deep clean of your dreams, Delah has the secrets. “Having a set spring-cleaning routine makes it so much easier to clean your home properly and regularly,” he says.

Here’s how to turn a passable clean into a professional finish:

  • Clean in a clockwise fashion around each room, from top to bottom, with a microfibre cloth and multipurpose spray, and wipe down all surfaces. Don’t neglect crevices and corners, cobwebs or wall marks.
  • Pay attention to high-touch areas, including light switches, electric sockets, door frames and handles.
  • Vacuum the floors (switch to a brush attachment for tricky edges and corners). Shift big furniture to clean the floor beneath.
  • Don’t forget to mop or, better still, steam mop all hard floors, finishing where you started cleaning so you don’t miss any spots (and your feet stay dry!). “Other than a vacuum, the one cleaning appliance I can’t live without is a steam mop. Nothing gets deeper into surfaces and loosens dirt and dust like it,” says Delah. Just avoid using your steam mop on unsealed flooring and soft plastic surfaces.

Your Spring-Clean Checklist

Now for that room-by-room spring-cleaning checklist. Let the cleaning begin:

Kitchen Checklist

  • Spray an oven cleaner on your oven interior and leave it to do its work. Use a drop cloth or newspaper layers to protect surfaces from chemical damage. Or avoid this job entirely and upgrade to a self-cleaning pyrolytic oven!
  • Remove countertop clutter, such as keys and papers, and throw out expired food from the pantry, fridge and freezer.
  • Get all the dirty jobs out of the way first, leaving surfaces and floors for last.
  • For a speedier microwave clean, cook a lemon in water in a microwave-safe bowl for 2–3 minutes to loosen stubborn food stains. Then wipe clean.
  • To clean greasy cooktop grates and rangehood filters, remove and soak for 30 minutes in hot water and detergent, then scrub until the grease is gone.
  • Don’t forget to clean your hardworking dishwasher! Fill a dishwasher-safe bowl with 1 cup of white vinegar, place in the bottom of the empty machine and run a hot cycle.

Bathroom checklist

  • Pre-treat the toilet with toilet cleaner and rinse after you’ve cleaned floors (keep the lid down as flushing releases a germ bomb!).
  • Use a grout brush to scrub between shower tiles. Remove limescale and soap scum on the showerhead by filling a plastic ziplock bag with vinegar and tying it to your shower head. Soak for 30 minutes.
  • Don’t neglect the shower drain either. Wear gloves and get in there to clear any blockages.
  • Clean mirrors, shelves, windows and window frames (they’re magnets for mould and mildew).
  • Wipe sink, taps and around vanity. Use bicarb soda and vinegar to clean drains, then turn on the hot water tap to rinse.
  • Change gloves to avoid cross-contamination.

Bedroom Checklist

  • Strip bed and wash sheets, mattress protector, quilt cover and pillowcases. Turn and rotate the mattress.
  • Vacuum headboard and mattress, taking care with piping and crevices where dead skin cells attract dust mites.
  • Wipe down all surfaces, including skirting boards, baseboards, windowsills and door frames.
  • Dust and vacuum ceiling fans and light fixtures. Hot tip: Use a lint roller for curtains and lampshades!
  • Give your duvet and pillows a quality clean with a trip through the bedding program on your washing machine.
  • Remake your bed with freshly laundered bed linen. Bliss!

Home Office Checklist

  • Recycle your used paper, and clean and empty your office bin.
  • Dust the electronics, including monitors and cables, then sanitise your mouse and keyboard – use your hair dryer to safely remove crumbs and dust.
  • Bring colour and cleanliness back to your carpets with the help of a carpet cleaner
