At a glance
The TCL 98 inch C8L is a premium large-screen Google TV built for home theatre fans, sports viewers and gamers who want a cinematic lounge-room setup. Its key strengths are the huge Mini LED display, strong built-in 200W audio and smooth 144Hz gaming support. One limitation is that its very large size needs a spacious room and careful placement.

Things to consider
Its 98 inch screen is ideal for immersion, but it needs a large room and may be less practical than smaller premium TVs for tighter spaces or simpler wall-mount installations.
Home theatre suitability score
9.5/10 - huge 98 inch screen, Mini LED picture performance and powerful 200W built-in audio make it highly suited to cinematic viewing.
Large room viewing fit
10/10 - excellent match for large living rooms and open-plan spaces thanks to its 98 inch size and wide-angle panel design.
Gaming performance rating
9.5/10 - 144Hz support, HDMI 2.1, VRR up to 288Hz and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro make it very capable for fast console and PC gaming.
Smart home integration compatibility
Google TV with Google Assistant voice control; works well for users already using Google services and compatible smart home devices.
Wall mounting ease
6.5/10 - VESA 600 x 500 support helps, but the very large 98 inch format means mounting is best handled with careful planning and adequate wall space.
Key benefits
- 98 inch screen: creates a cinema-style viewing experience that suits large lounge rooms and dedicated media spaces.
- SQD Mini LED panel: delivers strong brightness control and punchy contrast for movies, sport and everyday TV.
- Quantum Dot Technology: helps colours look richer and more vibrant for animated content, films and live sport.
- WHVA 2.0 Ultra Panel: maintains picture quality better from wider seating angles, making it useful in open-plan rooms.
- 144Hz refresh rate: keeps fast gameplay and quick camera movement smoother and clearer.
- AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and VRR 48-288Hz: helps reduce tearing and improve responsiveness for compatible gaming setups.
- 200W Bang & Olufsen audio: provides fuller, more room-filling sound than many TVs, reducing the need for an immediate soundbar upgrade.
- 6 star energy rating with estimated annual energy consumption of 818 kWh: gives a clear efficiency benchmark for a very large-screen TV.
Q: Will a 98 inch TCL C8L fit most lounge room walls?
A: Yes, if the room and wall are genuinely large. TCL 98C8L uses a 600 x 500 VESA pattern, and placement should suit a recommended viewing distance of 334cm. A wall mount is not included with the TV.
Q: Do built in speakers sound full enough without a soundbar?
A: Yes, for many lounge rooms. TCL 98C8L has 200W built-in sound with Bang & Olufsen speakers, Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual X. A separate soundbar is optional rather than essential for everyday movies, sport and streaming.
Q: Can this TV handle 4K 144Hz gaming on multiple consoles?
A: Yes. TCL 98C8L has 4 HDMI 2.1 ports with 4K 144Hz VRR support, so it suits multiple current consoles without constant cable swapping. It also supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and VRR from 48-288Hz.
Q: Will lower resolution TV channels look sharper on this screen?
A: No, not by dedicated upscaling. TCL 98C8L is not listed with upscaling, so HD or lower resolution sources rely mainly on the source device and panel processing. It is best matched to 4K streaming, discs and gaming.
Q: Can you record free to air TV onto USB storage?
A: Yes. TCL 98C8L supports PVR via USB, so it can record compatible free-to-air TV to a connected USB drive. Storage is not included, and recording availability can vary by channel, broadcast rules and source type.
Q: Are wireless headphones or speakers supported on the TCL 98C8L?
A: Yes. TCL 98C8L includes Bluetooth v5.4 for compatible wireless headphones, speakers and some controllers, and it also has dual-band WiFi for streaming. Bluetooth support can vary by accessory, so some device features may be limited.
