At a glance
This 98 inch TCL Google TV is built for buyers who want a cinema-style screen in a large lounge room or home theatre. Its main strengths are strong contrast from Mini LED, vibrant Quantum Dot colour, wide viewing angles and smooth 144Hz motion for sport and gaming. The main limitation is that its very large 218 cm width needs a big wall or entertainment unit and plenty of viewing distance.

Things to consider
Its 98 inch size is excellent for immersion, but it needs a spacious room and a wide placement area, so it is less flexible than smaller premium TVs for typical lounge rooms.
Home theatre suitability score
9/10 - the 98 inch screen size, Mini LED contrast and HDR format support make it a strong fit for cinematic viewing in large spaces.
Large room viewing fit
10/10 - ideal for large rooms, especially with seating set back around 3 to 4 m.
Gaming performance rating
8.5/10 - 144Hz refresh rate and smooth motion handling make it well suited to fast-paced gaming.
Smart home integration compatibility
Google TV platform with Gemini and voice-based smart features
Wall mounting ease
Best suited to large walls and careful installation planning due to its 218 cm width and 98 inch screen size
Key benefits
- 98 inch screen: creates a highly immersive viewing experience that suits large rooms and cinema-style setups.
- SQD Mini LED backlighting: delivers stronger contrast control and better brightness precision for movies, sport and HDR content.
- Quantum Dot Technology: produces richer, more vibrant colour for more lifelike images.
- HVA 2.0 Ultra Panel: helps maintain clearer detail from wider seating positions, making it easier for groups to enjoy the screen.
- 144Hz refresh rate: keeps fast action smoother for sport broadcasts and responsive gaming.
- Dolby Vision, HDR10-plus and HLG support: improves highlight, shadow and colour detail across a wide range of HDR content.
- Google TV with Gemini: gives access to smart streaming and voice-led content discovery in one platform.
- 6 star energy rating: offers strong energy performance for a very large 98 inch TV, with estimated annual energy consumption of 800 kWh.
Q: Will all HDMI ports support 4K gaming at 144Hz
A: No. HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 support 144Hz, while HDMI 3 and HDMI 4 are 60Hz only. That means a gaming console or PC should use one of the first two inputs if you want high refresh gaming with VRR support.
Q: Can this TCL 98C7L be wall mounted straight away
A: Yes. TCL 98C7L supports a 600 x 400 VESA wall mount, so it can be mounted on a compatible bracket. A mount is not included, and the TV measures 218cm wide, so the wall space needs to suit a very large screen.
Q: Is the built in sound enough without a soundbar
A: Yes, for many rooms. TCL 98C7L has 60W built-in audio with Dolby Atmos, DTS X and Bang & Olufsen sound. A separate soundbar can still add more bass and front-facing scale if movies are the main priority.
Q: Does the 98C7L upscale lower resolution TV channels and streaming
A: No. TCL 98C7L does not list an upscaling feature, so lower resolution TV channels and older video sources will not get a dedicated upscale mode. It makes the most sense if most of your viewing is already in 4K.
Q: Can AMD FreeSync and VRR help with inconsistent frame rates
A: Yes. TCL 98C7L supports VRR from 48-288Hz and AMD FreeSync, which can reduce screen tearing when frame rates change. It works best with a compatible console or PC connected to one of the 144Hz HDMI ports.
