At a glance
The Sony WH-1000XM5 are premium wireless over-ear headphones built for commuters, travellers and people who want quiet, comfortable listening for long sessions. Their key strengths are excellent noise cancelling, clear calls, adaptive sound features and up to 30 hours of battery life. One limitation is that listeners wanting a more specialist studio-style sound may prefer a more audiophile-focused option.

Things to consider
Excellent all-round performance, but buyers chasing a more specialist audiophile tuning or wired-first listening experience may prefer a dedicated high-end listening model.
Noise cancelling effectiveness
9.5/10 - highly effective at cutting engine, train and office noise for a quieter listening experience.
All-day comfort score
9/10 - lightweight 0.25 kg build and soft-fit design suit long listening sessions.
Commuter suitability
9.5/10 - ideal for trains, flights and daily travel thanks to strong noise cancelling, long battery life and a carry case.
Audiophile vs casual fit
Best for premium everyday listening rather than specialist audiophile or studio monitoring use.
Multi-device flexibility
8.5/10 - Bluetooth wireless use, voice assistant access and clear calling make them versatile across work and personal devices.
Key benefits
- Noise Cancelling: Advanced noise cancelling helps reduce distractions on flights, trains and in busy offices.
- 30-Hour Battery Life: Up to 30 hours of playback supports long workdays and extended travel between charges.
- Lightweight Build: The 0.25 kg over-ear design is easier to wear for extended listening than heavier alternatives.
- Built-In Microphones: Clear call pickup makes them practical for meetings, voice chats and hands-free use.
- Speak-to-Chat: Audio pauses automatically when you start talking, making quick conversations more convenient.
- Adaptive Sound Control: The headphones adjust listening and noise cancelling behaviour based on your environment.
- Ambient Sound Modes: Adjustable ambient sound helps you stay aware of announcements, traffic or office activity when needed.
- Travel Case Included: The included carry case makes the headphones easier to protect and pack for travel.
Q: Does the noise cancelling block all background noise on flights?
A: No. Sony WH-1000XM5 noise cancelling is designed to reduce steady sounds such as engine hum and office noise, not remove every voice or sudden sound completely. Ambient Sound modes are useful when you want to hear announcements instead.
Q: Can you still hear announcements while wearing these headphones?
A: Yes. Sony WH-1000XM5 includes adjustable Ambient Sound modes, so outside sound can be let in when needed instead of shutting everything out. That suits airport gates, train platforms and quick chats without removing the headphones.
Q: How does Speak-to-Chat work on the Sony WH-1000XM5?
A: Speak-to-Chat pauses audio when you start talking and lets ambient sound in for short conversations. It is useful for quick interactions at a desk or in transit, but it can interrupt playback if you often talk or sing along while listening.
Q: Are these headphones suitable for work calls and video meetings?
A: Yes. Sony WH-1000XM5 has built-in microphones for calls and voice assistant access, so it suits phone calls and online meetings from a laptop or mobile. It is still an over-ear listening headset, not a dedicated office headset with a boom mic.
Q: Will the Sony WH-1000XM5 feel heavy during long listening sessions?
A: Sony WH-1000XM5 weighs 250g, which is light for over-ear noise cancelling headphones. The soft fit leather and stepless slider are designed for extended wear, though the full over-ear shape will still feel larger than earbuds for some buyers.
Q: Are they easy to pack for commuting or overseas travel?
A: Yes. Sony WH-1000XM5 comes with a carrying case, which makes it easier to protect and pack in a work bag or cabin luggage. The over-ear design still takes more space than earbuds, so it suits travellers who prioritise comfort and isolation.
