OK, but you pay for the name and the look.
Toasts well enough, but I have now had to replace several SMEG toasters because the toasting rack bends with time and no longer 'tracks'. Also, if a piece of bread gets stuck in the toaster it is very difficult to remove, the draw underneath is pretty useless. And, of course, you end up buying a matching kettle, which is also only average. In my opinion both the toaster and the kettle are overpriced.

Family suitability score
9/10 - Four-slice capacity and versatile slots suit most family needs.
Ease of cleaning rating
8/10 - Removable crumb tray streamlines cleaning, though slots require occasional attention.
Small kitchen fit
Long, slim profile fits well on most benchtops but may require more length than compact models.
Bread type versatility
9/10 - Handles sandwich bread, sourdough, bagels, and artisan loaves with ease.
Key benefits
- Extra long slots: Accommodates up to 4 slices or large artisan breads with ease.
- 6 browning levels: Offers precise control for your preferred toast shade.
- 3 pre-set programs: Dedicated reheat, defrost, and bagel settings for convenience.
- Removable crumb tray: Makes cleanup quick and simple.
- Backlit knobs: Easy to see and use, even in low-light kitchens.
- Two extra large compartments: Toasts thick or long slices without crowding.
- Retro 50's design: Adds a distinctive, stylish touch to any kitchen.
Q: Will the long slots fit artisan bread as well as regular sandwich slices?
A: Yes. This model has 2 extra large long compartments, so it is designed to handle longer slices such as sourdough more easily than a standard short-slot toaster, while still accommodating up to 4 regular sandwich slices.
Q: Is this toaster a better choice than a standard 4-slot toaster for mixed bread sizes?
A: Yes. The long-slot layout gives more flexibility for longer or unevenly cut bread, which can be awkward in a conventional 4-slot toaster. If the household mostly uses artisan loaves, this design is usually the more practical option.
Q: Can this toaster handle frozen bread and toast that has gone cold?
A: Yes. It includes separate defrost and reheat functions, so it is suited to bread taken straight from the freezer or toast that needs warming without starting a full fresh cycle. Browning can still be adjusted across 6 levels.
Q: What does the bagel function do on this Smeg long-slot toaster?
A: The bagel function is intended for cut bagels and similar breads that benefit from a dedicated toasting cycle rather than a standard setting. It is useful for denser breakfast breads, but the cut halves still need to fit comfortably in the long slots.
Q: What does the 1500W power rating mean in everyday use?
A: A 1500W rating is typical for a long-slot 4-slice toaster and helps it recover heat when both compartments are loaded. In practice, it is suited to batch toasting, though dense breads may still need a higher browning level than soft sandwich bread.
