HP 61XL Black Ink Cartridge
I like the fact it is a larger quantity of ink, meaning I need to change the cartridge less often. Ink is so expensive, that I really need to compare prices to get the most economical deal.

HP CARTRIDGES
While other brands could be used on my printer the HP is faultless and there is little difference in cost.

Product out of date
We've always used this product, it's not a bad product but it was already out of date so we had to take it into the store to exchange it. This made the choice to save time and pay for delivery redundant.

At a glance
The HP 61 XL Black Ink Cartridge is a high-yield original ink cartridge for compatible HP Deskjet printers, built for reliable black text and everyday document printing. It suits home offices and regular users who want fewer cartridge changes, with an estimated yield of about 430 pages. Its main limitation is that it prints black only, so colour printing needs a separate cartridge.

Things to consider
This cartridge is a strong choice for black document printing, but it is only compatible with selected HP Deskjet models and does not handle colour output on its own.
Printer compatibility assessment
Best for selected older HP Deskjet and Ink Advantage models; a reliable fit when your printer specifically uses HP 61 series cartridges.
Page yield value score
7/10 - about 430 pages offers useful high-yield output for home and light office use, though heavier users may prefer newer extra-high-capacity options.
Ease of replacement rating
9/10 - simple cartridge swap process makes replacement quick and practical for everyday users.
Business vs home suitability
Better suited to home and small office document printing than high-volume business environments.
Key benefits
- High Yield Capacity: Prints about 430 black-and-white pages, helping reduce replacement frequency compared with a standard cartridge.
- Black Ink Output: Delivers dedicated black ink for clear everyday text documents and monochrome printing tasks.
- Original HP Cartridge: Designed by HP for compatible Deskjet printers to support dependable day-to-day performance.
- Home Office Friendly: Well suited to regular admin, schoolwork, invoices and general document printing at home.
- Fewer Interruptions: The XL format provides a higher page yield than standard versions, so users can print longer before changing cartridges.
- Straightforward Installation: Easy cartridge replacement helps get compatible printers back up and running quickly.
- Broad Legacy Deskjet Support: Fits several compatible HP Deskjet 1000, 1050, 2000, 2050, 3000 and 3050 series printers.
- Reliable Everyday Supply: A practical choice for users who mainly print black text and want consistent routine output.
Q: Can the HP 61XL Black cartridge be used instead of a standard HP 61 cartridge?
A: Yes. If a printer uses HP 61 cartridges, the HP 61XL Black fits the same slot and works as a higher-yield option. The main difference is capacity, so it is better suited to regular printing than the standard HP 61 black cartridge.
Q: Can this HP 61XL cartridge replace an HP 63 black cartridge?
A: No. HP 61XL and HP 63 are different cartridge series and are not interchangeable, even though both are black ink cartridges. Match the cartridge number printed on the old cartridge or listed for the printer model before buying.
Q: What does the 430-page yield mean for the HP 61XL Black in everyday printing?
A: The quoted yield is about 430 black-and-white pages under standard test conditions, based on light page coverage. Real output is usually lower if documents use bold text, graphics, headers, or frequent cleaning cycles between print jobs.
Q: Is the HP 61XL Black worth choosing over the standard HP 61 black cartridge?
A: Yes, for frequent printing. The XL version is designed to last longer and usually gives a lower cost per page than a standard HP 61, which is typically around 190 pages, so it suits home offices and regular document printing better.
Q: Can the HP 61XL Black cartridge print photos or colour documents on its own?
A: No. This cartridge supplies black ink only, so it is mainly for black text and monochrome documents. For full-colour printing or colour photos, the printer also needs the matching HP 61XL tri-colour cartridge installed.
