At a glance
The Canon PGI650 XL Black Ink Cartridge is a genuine high-yield pigment black cartridge for compatible Canon PIXMA printers. It suits home offices and everyday business users who want sharp text, dependable compatibility and straightforward replacement. Its key strengths are clean document output and up to 500-page yield. A limitation is that it is designed for specific Canon models only, so cross-printer flexibility is limited.

Things to consider
This cartridge is a strong choice for black text printing, but it is limited to compatible Canon PIXMA models and is less versatile than broader multi-printer or specialist photo-focused cartridge options.
Printer compatibility assessment
8/10 - Strong match for supported Canon PIXMA models such as MG6360 and MG5460, but not suitable for printers outside the compatible range.
Page yield value score
7/10 - Up to 500 pages is solid for regular black document printing, though heavier users may still replace cartridges often.
Ease of replacement rating
9/10 - Straightforward cartridge swap with genuine Canon fit and ink level recognition.
Business vs home suitability
Best for home offices and small business document printing; also a practical choice for everyday household use.
Key benefits
- High Yield Capacity: Prints up to 500 black pages before replacement, helping reduce cartridge change frequency for regular document users.
- Pigment Black Ink: Produces sharp, clear text on plain paper, making everyday documents easier to read.
- Genuine Canon Cartridge: Designed for reliable compatibility with supported Canon PIXMA printers.
- XL Format: Fits the same slot as the standard PGI-650 cartridge, so there is no printer setup change required.
- Chip Recognition: Supports accurate ink level reporting for easier monitoring and timely replacement.
- Easy Installation: Simple to insert and replace, helping minimise downtime when ink runs low.
- Text-Focused Performance: Well suited to reports, letters and forms where crisp black output matters most.
Q: Which Canon PIXMA printers fit this PGI650 XL black cartridge
A: Canon PGI650XLBK is listed for Canon PIXMA MG6360 and MG5460 printers. It is not a universal Canon cartridge, so the code on the current ink or your printer's compatible-ink list should match before buying.
Q: Can PGI650XL replace a standard PGI-650 black cartridge
A: Yes. PGI650XL fits the same slot as the standard PGI-650 black cartridge, so there is no printer setup change when swapping between them. The main difference is capacity, not a different bay, adapter or printer setting.
Q: Is this the right black cartridge for photo printing
A: No. Canon PGI650XLBK uses pigment black ink designed for sharp text on plain paper, not as the main black for glossy photo output. If photo printing matters, use the full ink set your PIXMA model specifies rather than this cartridge alone.
Q: Will off-brand cartridges work instead of this genuine Canon one
A: Yes, many printers can physically take alternative cartridges, but Canon PGI650XLBK is a genuine Canon cartridge with chip recognition for ink level reporting. Using a non-genuine option can change how reliably the printer recognises the cartridge.
Q: What does PGBK mean on Canon PGI650XL black ink
A: PGBK means pigment black, which is the black ink used mainly for document text on plain paper. On compatible PIXMA printers, it is separate from the photo and colour inks, so it needs to go into the matching black cartridge position.
Q: Does the XL version change print quality or just capacity
A: It changes capacity more than print quality. Canon PGI650XLBK is the XL version of the same pigment black type, so it is mainly for fewer replacements during regular document printing, not for a different look on the page.
