Your favourite coffee served with just a press of a button. Could an Automatic Coffee Machine be right for you?

What Is An Automatic Coffee Machine?

Automatic coffee machines handle the entire coffee preparation process from bean to cup at the press of a button. Unlike manual coffee machines that require grinding beans, dosing, tamping, timing shots and manually frothing milk, automatic models complete all these steps automatically. Key features of automated coffee machines include:

  • Built-in grinders: Grind fresh beans to correct consistency automatically

  • Automatic dosing: Measure exact coffee amount per shot

  • Tamping: Apply correct pressure to coffee grounds

  • Brewing control: Extract espresso at optimal temperature and pressure

  • Milk frothing: Steam and texture milk without manual intervention

  • Self-cleaning: Many models include automatic rinse cycles

Selected DeLonghi models use the exact amount of beans required per shot, eliminating spare grounds and reducing cleaning. Most automatic machines include coffee grinders as standard, whilst manual machines typically require separate grinder purchase.

Automatic Coffee Machines Types And Brewing Methods

Fully automatic machines handle every step without user intervention beyond selecting the desired beverage. Semi-automatic machines like some Breville models automatically grind, dose and tamp coffee whilst texturing milk, but allow manual control over extraction timing. Here are the types to choose from:

  • Fully automatic: Complete bean-to-cup process, pre-programmed drinks, touchscreen or button controls

  • Semi-automatic: Automated grinding and dosing, automatic flow cut-off after set volume

  • Super-automatic: Advanced milk systems, multiple drink recipes, customisable strength and temperature

Manual machines require user control over extraction timing, whilst semi-automatic models cut coffee flow automatically after reaching preset volume. Our coffee machine buying guide explains differences between automation levels in detail.

Key Features To Look For In Automatic Coffee Machines

Programmable drink settings allow saving preferred coffee strength, volume and milk ratios for consistent results. Water tank and bean hopper capacity affects refill frequency, with larger tanks reducing daily maintenance. Some machines provide low-level reminders when water or beans need replenishing.

Key Specifications to look for when buying:

  • Pressure rating: 15-19 bar for proper espresso extraction

  • Grinder type: Ceramic grinders quieter and longer-lasting than steel

  • Boiler system: Dual boilers brew coffee and steam milk simultaneously

  • Display type: LCD or touchscreen for easy drink selection

  • Cup height clearance: Accommodates travel mugs and tall glasses

  • Drip tray capacity: Larger trays reduce emptying frequency

Descaling notification systems alert when mineral buildup requires cleaning. Self-cleaning functions automate rinse cycles after milk-based drinks. Browse gifts for coffee lovers for compatible accessories and maintenance products.

Automatic Coffee Machines take the hassle out of preparing café quality coffees and beverages. For a typical Manual Coffee Machine the beans have to be ground (if you want them fresh) to the right size and consistency for the brewing method, then measured and packed into the portafilter and finally locked in to the group head. Once the water reaches the right temperature, begin pouring the shot. If preparing a latte or cappuccino, the milk needs to be frothed. Once done, clean out the grounds from the head then wipe down and purge the steaming arm before making the next cup.

Preparing coffee in this way takes some getting used to. Not only is it time consuming especially for multiple cups, but it also requires some trial and error to learn all the skills to make coffee just right.

For Automatic Machines, simply stock the machine with beans and milk, then select the beverage you want and the machine takes care of the rest. Many models such as DeLonghi's use the exact amount of beans required then using up all the coffee with no spare grounds remaining to avoid more cleaning. Most Automatic Coffee Machines come with a Coffee Grinder but this isn't always the case for Manual Machines.

Semi-Automatic Machines like some of Breville's offering automatically grind, dose and tamp the coffee while texturing the milk, automating the more challenging aspects of manual coffee preparation but still allowing some control over the process. Unlike Manual Coffee Machines, a Semi Automatic Machine automatically cuts the flow of the coffee after a set amount has been poured, whereas a Manual Machine has its flow of coffee controlled entirely by the user.

Fully Automatic Coffee Machines take care of the whole process so you go from bean to cup after just pressing a button or two. Whether it’s a fully Automatic or Semi Auto Coffee Machine most come with a Milk Frother or automatic steam wand to take the guess work out of milk texturing, while the Manual Coffee Machines that do come with milk frothers require manual operation just like a real cafe barista. Fully Automatic Coffee Machines are often much larger like these Jura models and generally cost more upfront but make café quality coffee easy.

Regularly cleaning an Automatic Coffee Machine ensures it keeps running efficiently and save both time and money on more intensive cleaning later. Some machines make it easy with automatic self-cleaning cycles that may require a special Coffee Machine Cleaning solution or tablet to run, so make sure to factor that in when shopping.

All Coffee Machines from Manual to Automatic models need to be descaled regularly. Minerals found in water can deposit and build up inside the steam arm, pipes and boiler. If they aren’t cleaned out regularly this can block water flow and stop the machine from working properly. Using filtered water in a machine can help reduce this build up and make descaling easier, but it's still recommended to descale the machine monthly.

If the machine has a steaming arm, wipe it down after each use with a clean cloth and purge the inside by steaming into the drip tray with many Automatic machines automatically doing this. Milk quickly becomes hardened on steam wands due to the heat leading to blockages and bacteria growth, so wlways follow the user manual for cleaning and maintenance requirements of each machine.

Automatic Coffee Machines are great for café quality coffees at home. Their convenience and ease of use means they tend to be more expensive. If you have the skills and knowledge, you may prefer a Manual Coffee Machine and if you’re not fussed on using freshly ground coffee, then a Capsule Coffee Machine might just do the trick for a quick and satisfying caffeine hit. Automatic Machines tend to be larger and heavier than Manuals, although some can be more compact like the Smeg Automatic range while Pod Capsule Machines can be smaller again.

When shopping for an Automatic Machine, consider what sort of drinks and beverages needing to be made. Some machines will make espresso to a desired strength and volume, whilst others can also automatically froth the milk for a cappuccino or latte. Some machines will also provide reminders to refill the water tank or bean hopper if they're running low.

If you're worried about regular cleaning and maintenance look out for machines that will notify you when they need descaling, or choose a machines with a self-cleaning function.

Automatic coffee machines typically measure 25-45cm wide depending on features and capacity. Compact models around 25-30cm suit limited bench space, whilst full-featured machines with dual boilers and large bean hoppers span 35-45cm. Height ranges from 35cm for streamlined designs to 50cm for models with tall cup clearance.

Dimension considerations:

  • Bench depth: Most require 35-45cm for proper ventilation

  • Weight: 8-15kg affects portability and installation requirements

  • Bean hopper capacity: 150-400g affects refill frequency

  • Water tank volume: 1.5-3 litres determines daily refills needed

Smeg automatic models offer more compact footprints whilst maintaining full functionality. Jura machines tend towards larger dimensions to accommodate commercial-grade components. Consider available bench space alongside feature requirements when selecting size.

Fully automatic machines include milk frothers or automatic steam wands that texture milk without manual operation. Manual steam wands require user control similar to café equipment, whilst automatic systems heat and froth milk to preset consistency. There are different milk systems to choose from:

Automatic steam wands typically purge themselves after use to prevent milk hardening and bacteria growth. Removable milk containers require cleaning after each use per manufacturer recommendations. Our guide to best coffee machines for iced coffee covers cold milk preparation capabilities.

Automatic coffee machines simplify café-quality coffee preparation to button presses or touchscreen selections. After stocking beans and water, select desired beverage and the machine handles grinding, dosing, brewing and milk frothing automatically. Pre-programmed drink recipes eliminate trial and error learning required for manual operation. Features include:

  • One-touch operation: Single button produces complete drinks

  • Programmable profiles: Save multiple users' preferred settings

  • Guided descaling: Step-by-step cleaning instructions on display

  • Auto-cleaning cycles: Reduce manual maintenance requirements
