Amazing toaster
This Breville 4 slice toaster is next level on a previous make we had. For one thing it toasts so evenly.and I love the fact that on the touch of a button the toast lowers down into the toaster

Best Toaster ever
We had our old toaster for probably 20 years. It always burnt the edges of the bread and it was time for a new one. So, off to the Good Guys, our go to store for all of our appliance needs. The features this Breville toaster has are fantastic. It quietly lowers the bread and when ready it quietly raises the finished product. Works well with fresh or frozen bread or crumpets. We love it.

Automated lowering and raising along with each of the auto functions work really well. Nice metal body. Worth the upgrade from a manual toaster.

At a glance
The Breville The Smart Toast 4 Slice is a family-friendly toaster built for households that want fast, flexible breakfast prep. Its motorised Lift & Look, A Bit More function and wide slots make it especially handy for crumpets, fruit bread and thicker slices. The sturdy diecast body adds durability, but it may feel larger than simpler 2-slice models in compact kitchens.
What it’s great for
- Family Breakfasts
- Everyday Toasting
- Thick Bakery Items
- Busy Morning Routines
Where it works best
- Family Kitchen
- Busy Household
- Shared Home Kitchen
Who it’s for
- Families
- Busy Households
- Home Cooks
- Multi-Person Households
Things to consider
It offers strong convenience features and 4-slice capacity, but it takes up more bench space than compact 2-slice toasters and does not include highly specialised bread presets.
Family suitability score
9/10 - 4-slice capacity, fast 2000W performance and flexible slot sizing suit households preparing multiple serves at once.
Ease of cleaning rating
8/10 - the removable crumb tray makes regular clean-up straightforward.
Small kitchen fit
Better suited to medium to large kitchens due to its 4-slice format, though base cord storage helps reduce bench clutter.
Bread type versatility
9/10 - extra wide, deep self-centring slots are well suited to standard bread, crumpets, fruit bread and thicker bakery slices.
Key benefits
- 4-slice capacity: Toasts up to four slices at once, making breakfast prep faster for families or shared households.
- Extra wide and deep slots: Handles crumpets, fruit bread and thicker bakery items more easily than narrow standard slots.
- Motorised lift & look: Lets you check toast progress without cancelling the cycle, helping you fine-tune browning with less guesswork.
- A bit more function: Adds about 30 seconds to the toasting cycle when your bread needs a little extra colour without starting again.
- 2000w heating element: Provides high-power toasting performance for quicker heat-up and fast breakfast preparation.
- Led countdown indicator: Shows toasting progress clearly so you can see how long is left before serving.
- Removable crumb tray: Makes routine cleaning simpler and helps keep the toaster and benchtop tidier.
- Diecast metal body: Adds a solid, durable feel that suits everyday use and gives the toaster a more premium kitchen look.
Q: Can the Breville The Smart Toast 4 Slice handle fruit bread without burning it as easily as a standard toaster?
A: Yes. This model includes a dedicated Fruit Bread setting that adjusts the toasting time for denser, sweeter loaves, which can colour faster than regular bread. It is designed to reduce guesswork rather than relying on a hotter standard cycle.
Q: How is the Lift and Look function useful on the Breville Smart Toast 4 Slice?
A: It is useful because the motorised carriage raises the bread briefly so you can check the colour without cancelling the cycle. That helps with mixed bread types, where one slice may need more time and another may already be ready.
Q: What does the A Bit More button do on the Breville BTA845BSS?
A: It adds a short extra toasting cycle after the main one finishes, instead of starting again from scratch. That makes it handy when toast is nearly done but not quite right, especially with thicker slices or cooler bread from the pantry.
Q: Are the slots on the Breville The Smart Toast 4 Slice suitable for thicker breads and crumpets?
A: Yes. It has extra wide and deep self-centring slots, so it is better suited to thicker slices, crumpets and similar bakery items than a basic narrow-slot toaster. Self-centring also helps toast both sides more evenly.
Q: Does the Breville Smart Toast 4 Slice give a clearer idea of when the toast will be ready?
A: Yes. It includes an LED countdown indicator and a toast-ready sound alert, so there is a clearer visual and audible cue than with a basic lever toaster. That is helpful when making multiple rounds or watching several breakfast items at once.
