Good value 4TB external hard drive

Was looking for a 5TB hard drive and have both WD and Seagate drives for back ups. These 4TB were on special so ordered a blue and a red (online only, no store pick-up). Blue arrived and is as expected but 6 weeks later still waiting for red drive. Good communication and is supplied by third party, hence the wait. Feel confident that if the drive does not arrive Good Guys will reimburse.

It suits students, home users and anyone needing plenty of storage without moving to a higher-cost SSD. Key strengths are its large capacity, simple setup and easy portability. Things to consider

This portable HDD offers much more storage per dollar than many SSDs, but it is slower for large transfers and less resilient to drops or movement while operating.

Portability rating

8/10 - compact and easy to carry, though not as pocket-friendly or movement-tolerant as many portable SSDs

Backup suitability

High - a strong fit for personal backups, media libraries and secondary copies of everyday files

Durability vs category average

Average - typical for a portable HDD, but more sensitive to knocks and movement than solid-state models

Multi-device compatibility

Good for laptops and desktops with USB-A or compatible USB ports; less convenient for phones or tablets without adapters

Ease of use score

9/10 - straightforward external storage for most users with minimal setup for basic file saving and backup

Key benefits

  • 4tb capacity: Gives you substantial room for large photo libraries, videos, documents and backups in one portable drive.
  • Portable design: Easy to slip into a bag or drawer, making it practical for moving files between home, work and study.
  • Usb 3.0 connection: Supports faster file transfers than older USB 2.0 connections when used with a compatible port.
  • Plug-in storage expansion: Adds extra space to a laptop or desktop without opening the computer or installing internal hardware.
  • Everyday backup use: Well suited to routine backups of personal files and folders so important data is not kept in only one place.
  • Desktop-to-travel flexibility: Works well as both a stay-at-home backup drive and a portable archive you can carry when needed.
  • Distinct blue finish: Easy to identify among cables and accessories, which helps in shared desks or multi-drive setups.

Q: Does the 4TB WD My Passport need a separate power adapter?

A: No. This My Passport portable HDD is powered through its USB 3.0 connection, so there is no separate power pack to carry. That makes it easier for travel or desk use, but it still needs to be plugged into a compatible USB port to operate.

Q: Can this WD My Passport 4TB be used with both Windows and Mac?

A: Yes, but it may need reformatting depending on the computer being used. Out of the box, My Passport drives are commonly set up for Windows, while Mac users may need to change the file system first if they want full read and write access.

Q: Is a portable HDD like this My Passport a good choice for backing up photos and videos?

A: Yes. A 4TB portable HDD suits large photo libraries, home videos and general PC backups where capacity matters more than speed. It is better for storage and backup than for fast editing workflows, where an external SSD usually feels quicker.

Q: Does the WD My Passport include backup or password protection features?

A: Yes. The My Passport range is known for backup software support and password protection with hardware encryption, which helps if the drive stores private files. Software features can vary by operating system, so Mac and Windows setup may differ slightly.

Q: How long does a WD My Passport portable hard drive typically last?

A: A portable hard drive like this typically lasts around 3 to 5 years with normal use, though lifespan depends on handling, travel and how often it is plugged in. It is best used as a backup destination, not the only place important files are kept.
