Must have fridge for a mum of boys

I’ve been looking up upgrade my fridge for a few years. I had been looking at this particular model for 12 months in hope of my other one dying. After 2 failed attempts at killing my small-not-big-enough- for 3 sons- fridge- my husband agreed we needed a bigger one after playing Christmas food Tetris for weeks I love the 4 doors, so my sons can open just one door to get the milk or bbq sauce rather then standing with both doors open while they call out to me to ask where said milk or sauce is. I also love that you can have the 2 smaller compartments as freezers or one as a drinks fridge. I’m still getting used to the shorter shelves but that’s ok, I’ve put all the tall things in the doors and my OCD L self loves having jams and other hard lines up in their little drawers (Kmart for the win for your organisation) But mostly what I LOVE is the plumbing. Filtered water, and unlimited ice that my middle son uses until his heart is content and no daily argument to refill the ice cube tray! Our home is so much more peaceful now. I can not rate this item highly enough, and it has quickly become my favourite thing in my kitchen!

    Super Upgrade

This four door beauty replaced our older French door Fisher & Paykel refrigerator. We love the practical storage layout compared to other brands. Having an ice maker and freshwater dispenser is so useful as is the Variable Temperature Zone where I take food out for cooking without having to thaw. User friendly controls. A super upgrade.

At a glance

This 690L quad door fridge is a premium option for families who need flexible storage, plumbed ice and water, and smart controls for busy kitchens. Its standout strengths are the variable temperature zone, large fresh food capacity and easy-access layout. One limitation is that it needs a plumbed water connection and, at 463kWh per year, it is not the lowest-energy option in its class.

What it’s great for

  • Large Family Food Storage
  • Entertaining
  • Flexible Fresh and Frozen Storage
  • Bulk Grocery Shops
  • Modern Connected Kitchens

Where it works best

  • Family Kitchen
  • Open-Plan Home
  • Entertaining Area
  • Modern Cabinetry Fit-Out

Who it’s for

  • Large Families
  • Busy Households
  • Home Entertainers
  • Cooks Who Buy in Bulk
  • Households Wanting Plumbed Ice and Water

Things to consider

It offers strong flexibility and premium convenience, but households seeking the lowest running costs or a non-plumbed installation may prefer a simpler, more energy-frugal model.

Family suitability score

9/10 - Excellent capacity split across fridge, freezer and variable zone makes it well suited to larger households.

Entertaining suitability

9/10 - Plumbed ice and water, wide storage and flexible zone control make it highly practical for hosting.

Fresh food storage performance

9/10 - Large 453L fridge section, humidity control and adaptive cooling support strong day-to-day fresh food storage.

Energy efficiency vs category

7/10 - A 4 star rating is good for this size, though 463kWh per year is still notable for energy-conscious buyers.

Kitchen space fit

Best for medium-to-large modern kitchens seeking a slim-profile quad door fridge with a built-in look and plumbed water access

Key benefits

  • 690l total capacity: Generous storage volume gives large households more room for weekly shops, platters and taller items.
  • Variable temperature zone: The 119L compartment can adapt to changing needs, giving you more flexibility for chilled drinks or extra frozen storage.
  • Plumbed ice and water: Filtered water and automatic ice are available on demand for everyday convenience and entertaining.
  • Activesmart foodcare: Cooling adjusts to daily use patterns to help maintain more consistent storage conditions.
  • Wi-fi connectivity: You can change settings remotely and receive door-open alerts for added control.
  • Humidity control system: Designed to help keep fruit and vegetables fresher for longer in everyday use.
  • Fast freeze and ice boost: Handy quick-action modes help when loading fresh groceries or when you need more ice quickly.
  • 4 star energy rating: A 4 star rating with estimated annual energy consumption of 463kWh offers solid efficiency for a large 690L fridge.

Q: Does the water dispenser work without plumbing connected?

A: No. The ice maker and water dispenser need a fixed water connection for ongoing use. The refrigerator still cools and freezes normally without plumbing, but filtered water and automatic ice are not available until it is connected.

Q: Can the variable zone be used as extra freezer space?

A: Yes. The 119L variable zone can be switched to suit changing storage needs, including colder settings for extra frozen food or softer frozen items. It is flexible space, not a second full-size freezer, so organisation still matters.

Q: How much usable freezer space is there before changing zones?

A: The refrigerator gives you 118L of dedicated freezer space before you change any flexible compartments. If you need more room at busy times, the 119L variable zone can be set colder, which is useful when bulk shopping or entertaining.

Q: What happens if the fridge loses Wi-Fi or internet access?

A: It keeps running with its current settings. Wi-Fi is there for remote setting changes and door-open alerts, so the main cooling system does not rely on internet access for normal fridge, freezer, ice or water operation.

Q: Is this Fisher and Paykel fridge expensive to run?

A: RF730QNUVX1 has a 4 star energy rating and estimated annual energy consumption of 463kWh. For a large 690L fridge, a higher star rating generally means lower running costs than another 690L fridge with a lower rating.

Q: Is this a slimline option for a 90cm fridge space?

A: No. This is a full-width 90.5cm refrigerator, so it suits a cavity planned for a large French door model rather than a narrow fridge space. The slim profile helps it sit neatly with modern cabinetry, but width is still the key fit check.
