Feeling stuck trying to decide if you want a Mac or a Windows laptop? Finding it hard to wrap your head around the differences between Macbook Air and Macbook Pro? Here’s everything you need to know.
Macbooks are a line of Laptop computers made by Apple. As with other Apple products, a MacBook is completely designed by Apple both in terms of its hardware and the operating system. This is not necessarily the case with other computers, which are often constructed by one company and run an operating system by another.
The advantage of Apple’s design philosophy is that both the hardware and the operating system are designed specifically with the other in mind, ensuring efficiency and ease of use. This extends to other Apple products, which means that the macOS on an Apple Macbook will effortlessly share and connect with the operating system on other Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
Despite the emphasis on the ‘Apple ecosystem’, a Macbook is still compatible with other software packages and hardware. Many Windows programs have macOS versions and many programs exclusive to macOS can produce file formats that are compatible with Windows software.
The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are two different lines, each with their own models and technical specifications. In general, the Macbook Air range are designed to be lightweight, thin and portable whereas the Macbook Pro range prioritises power and performance without sacrificing too much portability.
In order to slim the design, the Macbook Air has fewer ports than the Macbook Pro. Ports aka IO add a lot of bulk to a Computer, which means the larger Macbook Pro offers a wider range of HDMI, SD Card, USB-C and Thunderbolt ports.
In terms of value for a general user, the Macbook Air will offer great, portable performance. If you are after the very best in performance, battery capacity and screen quality, a Macbook Pro offers the very best Apple has to offer.
When it comes to the feel and build quality of the Keyboard or trackpad, both the Macbook Air and Macbook Pro are similarly comfortable and tactile.
Historically, Apple’s operating system and computer hardware has often been compared to Microsoft’s Windows operating systems. Each has different advantages that will appeal to different individual users.
Before deciding on a new Laptop or Computer, it's worth thinking about what devices you already own. macOS is designed to make compatibility with other Apple products as quick and easy as possible. If you already own an iPhone or iPad, you may find the perks of the Apple ecosystem a plus.
It's also worth thinking about what you want to be able to do on your laptop and what specific software needs to be run. Macs are popular amongst music producers, graphic designers and videographers due to the software available. If you are interested in Gaming, far more video games are compatible with Windows than with macOS.
In terms of popularity, Windows 11 can be found on a higher number of computers from entry level laptops to high performance Gaming PCs.
There is a persistent idea that Apple computers like the Macbook do not get computer viruses. Whilst it’s true that Apple continues to take product security seriously by investing heavily in tools to protect users from viruses, a Macbook like any other computer can get a virus.
Computer viruses come in a variety of forms and problems for you and your computer by stealing personal data, bombarding ads that can’t be closed or by slowing a computer to then recommend a fake paid service to restore it.
The best thing you can do to protect yourself, your family and your computer from malicious software is to practice good internet hygiene. Be cautious with the attachments and software downloaded and take care when internet browsing, particularly on unfamiliar websites. Never download unknown attachments in your email or click untrustworthy links to websites you don't know. Extra precautions should be taken if your computer holds sensitive data such as two factor authentication (2FA) for passwords, and encryption for files.
