Reliable, No-Fuss DVD Drive That Gets the Job Done
I picked up the ASUS Zen USB-C & A External Optical Drive mainly to get files off my old DVDs. I probably could’ve gone with a cheaper drive, but I’ve used ASUS products before and they’ve always been more dependable, so I stuck with what I trust. It’s compact, clean-looking, and easy to carry around, and it doesn’t feel cheap at all. The disc tray is solid and steady, not flimsy or awkward when opening and closing, which I really appreciated when dealing with older discs. The tech is clearly from an older era, so I wasn’t expecting fast speeds — and that’s fine. The read speed feels true to when DVDs were actually popular, which worked perfectly for copying my old photos and videos. It is slow by today’s standards, but consistent and reliable. I didn’t test the write speed since I only needed to pull data from old DVDs. Overall, it’s a reliable, no-fuss drive that does exactly what I needed it to do.

Slim, handy and portable optical drive
Bought this to extract old DVD data backups. Great value. Easy to use and share the drive among my family as the laptops nowadays have no optical drive. It's essential to have this drive around. No regret buying.

Home office suitability
9/10 - strong fit for document archiving, software installs and occasional media use in compact workspaces.
Gaming compatibility score
4/10 - useful for installing older disc-based PC games, but limited for modern gaming and does not support Blu-ray.
Student use fit
8/10 - portable and easy to use for coursework backups, legacy media access and software discs.
Device compatibility range
Broad compatibility with USB-C and USB-A equipped PC and Mac computers.

Q: Does this external drive play Blu-ray discs or only CDs and DVDs?
A: No. Asus Zen USB-C & A External Optical Drive is built for CD and DVD reading and writing only. It supports common recordable DVD formats plus CD-R and CD-RW media, so Blu-ray playback and Blu-ray burning are not included.
Q: Will it run from one USB port or need extra power?
A: No. Asus Zen USB-C & A External Optical Drive draws power directly from a USB connection on your computer, so there is no separate power adaptor to carry. It is intended for standard CD and DVD jobs on a compatible USB-C or USB-A computer.
Q: Can this drive burn music CDs for car stereos?
A: Yes. It writes to CD-R and CD-RW discs, so it can be used to create audio or data CDs on a compatible PC or Mac. Playback still depends on the car stereo supporting the disc type and the format of the files you burn.
Q: What kind of M-DISC media works with this Asus drive?
A: This drive supports M-DISC writing on DVD+R single-layer media at 4X speed. That suits longer-term archiving of files on compatible discs, but it does not mean every blank DVD will work as M-DISC media.
Q: Is USB 2.0 fast enough for everyday DVD and CD jobs?
A: Yes. USB 2.0 is suitable for normal disc reading, burning and software installs because CD and DVD media are slower than modern SSD storage anyway. It is not designed for high-volume workflows where faster transfers matter.
Q: Will it work with a newer USB-C laptop and older PC?
A: Yes. Asus Zen USB-C & A External Optical Drive is designed for computers with either USB-C or USB-A, so it suits newer laptops and older desktops without a separate adapter. It still needs a PC or Mac that supports external optical drives.
