OLED vs LED: Why LG TV display Is Better For Movies, Sport, Gaming

May 17, 2023 - 2 min read

It can be a little overwhelming when it comes to different technologies and understanding what they all mean. If you want to learn more about OLED TVs v LED TVs and why you should choose LG, we’ve got you covered.

Benefits of OLED v LED TVs

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) may sound like LED (Light Emitting Diodes), which is the most common TV technology, but they are very different when it comes to viewing quality. LED, like most other screen types, uses a backlight, which gives a nice bright screen. However, the blacks will never be true black, and there are often “blooms” of colour.

In comparison, OLED does not have a backlight, and instead turns each pixel on and off individually. Although this means the screen is not quite as bright (usually around 1000nits, while LED/QLED/LCD have up to 4000nits of brightness), it means that blacks and colours remain true. OLED panels are really responsive and therefore the best kind of TV to watch sports and play video games on. Most LG OLED TVs have a refresh rate of 120Hz, which is pretty close to that of very high-end PC monitors. The other bonus of OLED is that, because there isn’t a backlight, the panels are extra thin, paving the way for the stunning LG Gallery series. The Gallery Series has the quality of a premium TV, but with the luxury look of a flat piece of art on the wall, complete with hidden cables.

NanoCell Screen Technology Nuances

NanoCell technology is that perfect sweet spot between OLED and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), but with some extra features and a lower price tag.

NanoCell, as implied by its name, has a lot of really small cells in the screen that control the colour by absorbing light and making the reds and greens look purer. There is still a backlight in there, allowing the screen to get brighter for those lucky enough to have lots of windows in their living room, but the backlight allows for much better controlled dimming of more specific areas. NanoCell also boosts the picture’s vibrancy, allowing for deeper colours and more subtle textures and shifts.

While most LCD screens only look good straight on, LG’s NanoCell not only uses fancy light and colour filtering particles, but also has an IPS (In-Plane Switching) screen. This is the same kind of screen technology found in phones and professional colour-grading monitors used by artists and video editors. IPS screens look good from most angles, so with NanoCell you can enjoy what you are watching from the best seat in the house.

Why Choose An LG OLED Smart TV?

Aside from being the leader in making OLED panels, LG’s biggest strengths are its diverse technology and its operating system. If you watch a lot of Disney+, catch-up TV, streaming services or YouTube and don’t want to hook up another device, LG gives you the best smart TV experience that just about anyone can drive.

As for the diversity of technology, most TVs either support Dolby Vision or HDR 10+ (which are the two competing HDR standards), but LG TVs have both, so you’re covered whichever one wins.
