Product Overview

The 70cm Induction Cooktop heats four induction zones on a black ceramic glass surface.

A 70cm width and four-zone layout suit kitchens that need extra space for larger pots or multiple pans, making it a strong fit for family meal routines or busy home cooks. Touch and slide controls with nine power levels allow precise adjustments, while the programmable 99 minute timer helps manage complex recipes. The cooktop's low profile at 51mm height integrates neatly into most benchtops.

PowerBoost rapidly brings water to the boil or heats pans quickly, saving time during meal preparation. BoilProtect detects rising bubbles and automatically reduces heat to prevent boil-overs when cooking pasta or vegetables in suitable pots. Hob2Hood compatibility lets the cooktop communicate with supported rangehoods for automatic fan control. Safety features include a child lock, residual heat indicators, and a safety cut-off for peace of mind.

Model WHI743BD in black comes with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty.

    Instant heat

Finally found a cook top that's bigger than the previous ceramic Westinghouse I'd bought many years ago, it was an odd size with most induction cook tops smaller that the cutout! Both my wife and I are super happy with this one. Typical induction, instant heat, instant off, and my son says it's the quietest induction cook top (on full heat) he's heard. Yes all induction cook tops hum and they are louder the higher the heat. Easy to use controls, even tried out the boil protection, works well.

At a glance

The Westinghouse WHI743BD is a 70cm four-zone induction cooktop designed for families and home cooks who want more space, fast heating, and simple touch control. Its standout strengths are BoilProtect, PowerBoost, and Hob2Hood compatibility, plus useful safety features. A fair limitation is that it offers four zones only, so larger or more demanding kitchens may prefer a wider premium model.

Things to consider

While it offers strong everyday features and a roomy four-zone layout, shoppers wanting more cooking zones or more advanced premium functions may prefer a larger higher-end induction cooktop.

Family cooking suitability

Very good for family cooking thanks to the 4-zone layout, 70cm size, fast heating, and timer support for multi-dish meals.

Energy efficiency score

8.5/10 - induction heating directs energy into the cookware and PowerBoost helps reduce time spent waiting for pans to heat.

Cookware compatibility assessment

Requires induction-compatible cookware with a magnetic base; best results come from suitable stainless steel or enamelled pots and pans.

Safety rating

9/10 - strong safety offering with child lock, residual heat indicators, safety cut-off, and boil-over prevention support.

Ease of cleaning

9/10 - the flat black ceramic glass surface is easy to wipe down and has no raised burners or grates to clean around.

Key benefits

  • PowerBoost: Adds rapid heat when you need to boil water faster or heat pans quickly during meal prep.
  • BoilProtect: Detects rising bubbles and automatically reduces heat to help prevent boil-overs in suitable pots.
  • Touch and Slide Controls: Makes it easy to adjust heat quickly and accurately across 9 power levels.
  • 99 Minute Timer: Helps manage longer or multi-step recipes without constant checking.
  • Hob2Hood Compatibility: Can work with compatible rangehoods for automatic fan response while cooking.
  • Pause Function: Temporarily drops active zones to a low setting so you can step away and resume cooking easily.
  • Child Lock: Adds peace of mind by helping prevent accidental changes to settings.
  • Residual Heat Indicators: Clearly show when the surface is still hot after cooking.

Q: Is this a straightforward replacement for an older 70cm cooktop?

A: It can be, if the benchtop opening suits this cooktop's 700mm width, 520mm depth and 51mm height. WHI743BD is a low-profile model, but replacement jobs still need the cut-out and electrical setup checked before installation.

Q: What cookware does BoilProtect work with on this model?

A: BoilProtect is designed for stainless steel and enamelled pots filled with water. The cooktop still needs induction-compatible cookware with a magnetic base for normal use, and BoilProtect is not the setting for milk, sauce or non-water cooking.

Q: Does Hob2Hood work with any rangehood or just compatible ones?

A: Hob2Hood works with compatible rangehoods, not every rangehood. On a supported hood, the fan can turn on and adjust automatically as cooking changes. Without compatibility, the cooktop still works normally and the rangehood is operated separately.

Q: Why can an induction cooktop hum at higher heat?

A: WHI743BD can make a light hum or fan noise, especially at higher power levels. The sound often depends on the pan's material and size as well as the heat setting, so noise by itself does not mean the cooktop is faulty.

Q: Can I pause cooking without losing the heat settings?

A: Yes. The Pause function drops all operating induction zones to the lowest setting, then returns them to the previous settings when selected again. It is useful for interruptions, but it is not the same as switching the cooktop off.

Q: How useful is the 99 minute timer in everyday cooking?

A: WHI743BD includes a programmable 99 minute timer, which suits dishes that need a defined cooking period or a reminder to return to the pan. It helps with timing, but induction heat still responds quickly, so food should still be monitored.

Q: Does the child lock stop the cooktop being turned on?

A: Yes. The child lock helps stop accidental changes or activation from the controls, which matters in family kitchens. WHI743BD also has residual heat indicators and a safety cut-off, but hot cookware and recently used zones still need care.
