Product Overview

The AX1800 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 VDSL/ADSL Modem Router connects your home to high-speed wireless and wired internet across multiple devices.

With support for both VDSL/ADSL and fibre or cable services, this TP-LINK modem router adapts to changing broadband needs and is suitable for households upgrading or switching providers. Four external antennas help extend Wi-Fi coverage, making it a strong fit for medium to large homes or spaces with multiple rooms.

Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax technology enables data transfer speeds up to 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, supporting streaming, gaming, and simultaneous device use. The router is backwards compatible with older Wi-Fi standards, so legacy devices can still connect. Wired connections are available via one WAN/LAN port and three LAN ports, while a USB 2.0 port allows for 3G/4G backup internet or media sharing.

Model ARCHER-VX1800V in black comes with a 3 year manufacturer's warranty.

Does not handle WiFi speeds of 500mbps and above. Not suitable for FTTP

The modem/router always feels warm, I haven't had this experience with other modems that I've had in the past. I'm concerned that it may cause problems in the future. I was having constant drop out and speed problems with my previous unit so I decided to update. It hasn't made any difference to the issues. I have now discovered that it is the modem causing the problems. I am on a FTTP connection. Not knowing anything about the various types of connections or equipment I have now discovered that the unit on the wall is an actual modem, therefore I only need a router. This model, as with my last, being a modem/router apparently causes bottle necking which reduces speed. Also, despite the speeds listed on the box, it does not handle the higher speeds. It will provide speed of 500mbps if your device is connected via ethernet, however it will lag and bottle neck and cap speeds if the device is connected via WiFi. I trust the TP Link brand and this is probably a good unit if you require a modem/router and are not connected to your provider at a high speed. I advise you to do your research and find out exactly what type of modem/router or router is needed for your internet set up at home with particular attention to connection type, ie NBN, FTTP, ADSL ect and the speed that you connect at now or in the future

At a glance

This modem router is a practical choice for households wanting one device for VDSL/ADSL today and fibre or cable flexibility later. It suits medium to large homes, supports multiple connected devices, and offers Wi-Fi 6 speeds with wired ports for stable connections. A fair limitation is that it is not a premium high-speed tri-band model for demanding enthusiast setups.

Things to consider

It delivers strong everyday Wi-Fi 6 performance, but premium routers may offer faster multi-gig networking, tri-band capacity, or more advanced traffic management for heavier gaming and larger smart home setups.

Large home coverage score

8/10 - four external antennas and mesh support make it well suited to medium to large multi-room homes.

Smart home device compatibility

Good compatibility for mixed smart home environments, with support for current and older Wi-Fi standards across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

Gaming performance rating

7/10 - suitable for everyday online gaming with Wi-Fi 6 and wired LAN ports, though not as advanced as premium gaming routers.

Easy setup suitability

8/10 - a strong fit for home users wanting one device for modem and router duties, with included cables and quick setup guidance.

Key benefits

  • Wi-Fi 6 Dual-Band: Supports faster, smoother wireless performance for streaming, browsing and multiple connected devices.
  • Flexible Broadband Support: Works with VDSL/ADSL connections and can also connect to fibre or cable services through its WAN/LAN port.
  • Four External Antennas: Helps extend signal reach across multiple rooms for better coverage in medium to large homes.
  • 5 GHz Wireless Speed: Delivers up to 1201 Mbps on the 5 GHz band for smoother high-bandwidth tasks like HD streaming and gaming.
  • 2.4 GHz Wireless Speed: Delivers up to 574 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band for reliable everyday connectivity and wider in-home coverage.

Q: Can this modem router work with NBN fibre or cable services?

A: Yes. Archer VX1800v can connect to fibre or cable services through its WAN/LAN port, so it can be used as a router when your broadband arrives by Ethernet rather than DSL. It is also suitable for VDSL and ADSL connections.

Q: Does Archer VX1800v replace a separate modem on FTTN or ADSL?

A: Yes. Archer VX1800v has a built-in VDSL/ADSL modem, so it can connect directly to compatible DSL services without needing a separate modem in front of it. If your service comes in by Ethernet, use the WAN/LAN port instead.

Q: What can the USB 2.0 port actually be used for?

A: The USB 2.0 port supports 3G or 4G backup internet from a compatible USB modem, and it can also share media from a connected USB device across your network. It is not a high-speed USB port for heavier NAS-style file serving.

Q: Will my older Wi-Fi devices still connect to this router?

A: Yes. Archer VX1800v supports Wi-Fi 6 and is backwards compatible with older Wi-Fi standards, so existing phones, laptops and smart home devices can still join the network. Older devices connect at their own standard rather than Wi-Fi 6 speeds.

Q: How many wired devices can I plug into this router?

A: Archer VX1800v has three dedicated LAN ports for wired devices, plus one WAN/LAN port that can act as a network port when it is not being used for fibre or cable internet. Your internet connection type affects how many Ethernet ports remain free.

Q: Can I connect a home phone handset to Archer VX1800v?

A: Yes. Archer VX1800v includes an FXS phone port for a compatible VoIP home phone setup, so a handset can be connected where your service supports internet calling. It does not create a phone service by itself, because VoIP still depends on provider support.

Q: Does this router support WPA3 security for newer devices?

A: Yes. Archer VX1800v supports WPA3-Personal as well as WPA2 options, so newer devices can use stronger current home network security while older equipment can still connect. The best security mode depends on what your devices support.
