Things to consider
It offers stronger reception than many compact USB adapters, but it is bulkier and less discreet than nano models, and specialist premium adapters may offer more advanced antenna designs or higher-end performance tuning.
Compatibility with major brands
Broad compatibility with desktop and laptop computers that support USB, making it suitable for many common PC setups from major brands.
Ease of setup score
8/10 - simple USB connection and external adapter design make it easy to add wireless capability without opening the computer.
Home office suitability
9/10 - strong fit for home office use thanks to stable dual-band Wi-Fi, external antennas and reliable desk-based placement.
Upgrade flexibility
8/10 - an easy upgrade path for older desktops and laptops needing Wi-Fi 6 without internal hardware changes.
Durability vs category average
7/10 - the larger body and external antennas feel purpose-built for desk use, though compact adapters may be less exposed during transport.
Key benefits
- Wi-Fi 6 Performance: Supports combined wireless speeds up to 1800 Mbps for smoother streaming, faster downloads and more responsive everyday use.
- Dual High-Gain Antennas: Helps improve signal strength and stability, especially for desk setups further from the router.
- Dual-Band Connectivity: Lets you use 5 GHz for higher-speed tasks and 2.4 GHz for wider coverage and compatibility.
- USB 3.0 Connection: Provides up to 10x faster data transfer than USB 2.0, helping the adapter perform closer to its wireless capability.
- MU-MIMO Support: Maintains better wireless performance when multiple compatible devices are sharing network bandwidth.
- OFDMA Technology: Reduces latency on busy networks for clearer video calls and more responsive online gaming.
- External Upgrade Design: Adds modern wireless capability to older desktops and laptops without needing to open the computer.
- Modern Security Support: Includes WPA3, WPA2 and WEP support to help protect your wireless connection across different network setups.
Q: Do I need a Wi-Fi 6 router for this adapter?
A: No. Archer TX20U-PLUS can connect to older Wi-Fi networks as well as Wi-Fi 6. A Wi-Fi 6 router is needed to get this adapter’s newer standard and higher-speed benefits, but it can still work as an upgrade on an older home network.
Q: Can this adapter help a desktop under a desk get better signal?
A: Yes. The dual high-gain external antennas are designed to improve reception in setups where a desktop tower is tucked away or farther from the router. The trade-off is a larger adapter that suits a fixed desk better than regular travel.
Q: Will the large antennas get in the way on a laptop?
A: Yes, they can. Archer TX20U-PLUS has a larger body and two external antennas, so it may crowd nearby ports or feel awkward on a slim laptop. It is usually a better fit for a desk setup than for carrying around every day.
Q: Does it let you add Wi-Fi without opening the computer?
A: Yes. Archer TX20U-PLUS connects through USB 3.0, so it can add wireless networking without installing an internal card. That makes it a practical option for older desktops or laptops, especially if opening the device is not convenient.
Q: Which Wi-Fi bands does the Archer TX20U-PLUS support?
A: Archer TX20U-PLUS supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands. That gives more flexibility when choosing between better range on 2.4GHz or faster nearby performance on 5GHz, depending on where the computer sits relative to the router.
Q: What security types does this TP-LINK USB adapter support?
A: This adapter supports WPA3, WPA2 and WEP wireless security. That is useful if a router already uses newer WPA3 protection, while still allowing connection to older network setups that have not yet moved across to the latest standard.
