    Weight of the iron

I have found this iron to be quite heavy. Happy with its features but it is quite a bit heavier than previous irons.

Even better than our first Tefal iron

It wasn’t a good feeling when our old Tefal iron hit the tiles after falling from the ironing board. A new iron was needed and after diligent research we had narrowed the selection to the Tefal and the upmarket Philips. Comparing both in store made us realise that the Tefal was heavier but notwithstanding we bought the Tefal and could not be happier. It is a dream to use and does not require multiple passes across the item being pressed to produce a perfect result. Best iron we have ever owned!

    Tefal iron

I’m really happy with my Tefal iron. It heats up quickly, glides smoothly over clothes, and removes wrinkles efficiently. The steam function works really well, especially for thicker fabrics, and the iron feels comfortable and easy to handle. I also like the quality and sturdy design.

Glides well uses a lot of water but it leaks and I still get calcium deposits

After about 3 weeks of use I've found this iron great to iron with, however the iron leaks quite a bit of water if you forget to turn the steam setting off. It also leaves white calcium deposits around despite having a filter. My 50 dollar iron seemed to do just a good a job with less refilling, you cannot control the amount of steam let out on this iron so it is constantly on max. For the price I expected a lot better

Great iron, makes the chore easier

Been using this Tefal for a few weeks now and I'm pretty happy with it. The big win for me is the water tank, it holds more than my old iron so I'm not constantly stopping to refill it. That alone saves time. The auto switch off gives me peace of mind too. I've walked away a couple times forgetting to turn it off properly and knowing it'll shut itself down is reassuring. Steam output is solid. Gets through thick cottons and stubborn creases without much effort. Honestly, it's made ironing slightly less painful, which is saying something. Only thing I'd change is the temperature dial. I'm not a fan of fiddling with settings and trying to guess what heat level each fabric needs. Philips have that OptimalTemp thing where there's no dial at all, it would be nice to see Tefal do something similar. Overall though, it's a quality iron. Does the job well and the extra features make life easier. Worth the money if you iron regularly. Rating: 4.5/5

I honestly hate ironing, but it makes it so much less painful. It heats up quickly, glides really smoothly, and gets creases out fast without me having to go over the same spot again and again. The steam is powerful, it feels good to use, and the anti-calc feature is a big bonus. If ironing is not your favorite job either, this iron definitely makes it quicker and easier.

Things to consider

It offers strong steam and anti-calc performance, but it is less suited to travel or ultra-light use than compact travel irons or cordless specialist models.

Fabric care suitability score

9/10 - Strong steam, smooth soleplate and precision tip make it well suited to everyday fabrics and tougher creases.

Ease of use rating

8.5/10 - Lightweight design, clear water level indicator and comfort handle help make regular ironing straightforward.

Travel friendliness

Low - Best suited to home use rather than travel due to its full-size design and corded format.

Safety features assessment

7/10 - Anti-drip design supports cleaner operation, but it is not positioned as a travel or specialised safety-focused iron.

Key benefits

  • 55 g/min Continuous Steam: Delivers strong ongoing steam output to help smooth everyday wrinkles faster across shirts, dresses and larger items.
  • 260 g/min Steam Boost: Provides an extra burst of steam for stubborn creases in thicker fabrics or heavily wrinkled areas.
  • Durilium Airglide Soleplate: Glides smoothly over a wide range of fabrics to help reduce dragging and make ironing feel easier.
  • Micro-Calc Filter Technology: Filters steam to help prevent calc residue or stains reaching clothing during ironing.
  • Anti-Calc Collector: Helps capture scale buildup so the iron can maintain performance for longer with regular care.
  • 350 mL Water Tank: Supports longer ironing sessions with fewer refills, which is useful for baskets of mixed laundry.
  • Precision Tip: Makes it easier to iron around buttons, collars, pleats and narrow garment edges.
  • 2.5 m Power Cord: Gives you more reach and flexibility around the ironing board without needing to stay close to the power point.

Q: How is the Tefal FV9849 anti-calc system different from a standard steam iron?

A: The FV9849 combines a Micro-Calc Filter with an anti-calc collector, rather than relying on basic scale control alone. That matters if hard water is common, because it helps reduce calc residue and stains reaching fabric over time.

Q: Is the Tefal FV9849 powerful enough for thick fabrics like cotton shirts, linen and denim?

A: Yes. It delivers 55g/min continuous steam for everyday ironing and a 260g/min steam boost for heavier fabrics or stubborn creases. It is better suited to regular household loads than light touch-up irons with lower steam output.

Q: Does the Tefal FV9849 glide well, or is it better for slow, heavy pressing?

A: It is designed to glide smoothly thanks to the Durilium Airglide soleplate, so it should suit buyers who want fewer repeated passes. At 1.295kg it is not the lightest style of iron, but that extra weight can help when pressing deeper creases.

Q: Will the 350ml water tank reduce how often the Tefal FV9849 needs refilling?

A: Yes. A 350ml tank is generous for a steam iron, so it should handle larger ironing sessions with fewer top-ups than smaller units. Actual refill frequency will vary with steam setting, especially if the 260g/min boost is used often.

Q: Is the Tefal FV9849 a good choice for detailed ironing around buttons, collars and seams?

A: Yes. The precision tip is made for tighter areas like collars, plackets and around buttons, while continuous steam diffusion helps keep coverage even. That combination is useful if dress shirts or school uniforms make up a big part of the ironing load.

Q: Does the Tefal FV9849 help prevent drips or marks on clothes while ironing?

A: Yes. This model includes an anti-drip system plus anti-scale features, which helps reduce water spotting and mineral residue on fabric. That is especially useful when ironing at lower temperatures or when the iron is used regularly with tap water.
