    Brilliant Cooktop

This induction cooktop is brilliant, l was concerned about changing from gas to this as most people complain about the hum and buzz induction make. This top barely makes a sound, my electric kettle and Ranghood make ten times more noise. Cooking is a breeze, temperature control is amazing, very responsive cooktop. Easy installation by our electrician and was great as it was the perfect size to replace in my stone benchtop, no alterations required. Winning. Easy to operate and very simple to understand. Love it.

Ideal size to replace 60cm ceramic

The 70cm Cooktop has plenty of room for four large saucepans. The induction system heats up much faster than the old ceramic tops. It also has little residual heat and great safety features. It has an easy to use menu system to control or combine heating areas. The timers are handy too. Good value for the money.

It offers fast heat response, simple touch and slide controls, and useful safety features for everyday cooking. The low profile surface also helps with cleaning. Its main limitation is that it only works with cookware that has a magnetic base.

It offers practical premium features for everyday cooking, but it does not appear to include more specialised functions some higher-end cooktops offer, such as flexible cooking zones or advanced assisted cooking programs.

Key benefits

  • 70cm Width: gives more space between pans than a standard 60cm cooktop, making it easier to cook multiple dishes at once.
  • Four Cooking Zones: supports preparing several pots or pans at the same time for everyday family meals.
  • Induction Heating: provides rapid response and precise temperature control for boiling, simmering and searing.
  • Touch and Slide Controls: makes it easy to adjust settings directly on the cooktop surface during cooking.
  • Nine Power Levels: gives flexible control for different cooking tasks, from gentle heating to higher heat cooking.
  • Programmable Timer: helps manage meal timing and reduces the need to watch each zone continuously.
  • Low Profile Glass Ceramic Surface: creates a streamlined built-in look and makes wipe-down cleaning easier after cooking.
  • Child Lock and Residual Heat Indicators: adds reassurance in busy kitchens by helping prevent unintended use and showing when the surface is still hot.

Q: Will a 70cm cooktop fit where a 60cm model was?

A: No, not automatically. Smeg SAI4744D is a 70cm cooktop, so a benchtop cut-out sized for a standard 60cm model may need alteration. The extra width gives more pan spacing, but replacement fit depends on the existing cavity size.

Q: Which pots and pans work on the Smeg SAI4744D?

A: Only cookware with a magnetic base will heat on SAI4744D. Many cast iron and induction-ready stainless steel pans are suitable, while aluminium, copper, and some stainless steel cookware will not work unless the base is magnetic.

Q: Why is the cooktop not detecting my pan properly?

A: The usual cause is incompatible cookware. SAI4744D uses induction, so the pan base must be magnetic and sit correctly on a cooking zone, otherwise the zone may not activate or may stop heating during use.

Q: Does this induction cooktop make a humming or buzzing noise?

A: Yes, some induction noise can occur during use. SAI4744D heats the pan through a magnetic field, so a light hum or buzz can happen with certain cookware or power settings, even when the cooktop is operating normally.

Q: Can I safely clean the surface straight after cooking?

A: No. SAI4744D has residual heat indicators, which show when a zone is still hot after cooking. The low profile glass ceramic surface is easy to wipe down, but wait until the indicator shows the area has cooled first.

Q: Is this a good replacement for cooking several dishes together?

A: Yes. SAI4744D has 4 cooking zones across a 70cm surface, so it gives more room between pans than a standard 60cm cooktop. That layout suits meal prep with multiple pots, but it still uses four zones rather than larger multi-zone layouts.
