    Induction way to go

I decided to change over from Gas to Induction for my stovetop as I have solar panels and wanted to use electricity more. I had to go smeg as I had Granite bench tops and that's what I had before so the cutout was the same. I wasn't prepared for how much I would love the induction, it's so quick, it's easy to use and I love that there's only 3 heating zones

At a glance

This 60 cm induction cooktop is a sleek, low-profile option for households that want fast cooking, simple cleaning, and reliable everyday control. It suits smaller to mid-sized kitchens needing to run up to three pans at once, with useful features like Multizone, Autopot Detection, and Keep Warm. Its main limitation is that the 60 cm size and three-zone layout offer less capacity than larger premium cooktops.

Things to consider

Compared with larger 70 cm to 90 cm induction cooktops, this 60 cm model has fewer zones and less space for cooking several large dishes at the same time.

Family cooking suitability

Good for small families and couples; handles everyday multi-pan cooking well, but larger households may prefer more zones.

Energy efficiency score

8/10 - induction heating delivers heat directly to cookware for responsive cooking with less wasted surface heat than many traditional electric cooktops.

Cookware compatibility assessment

Requires induction-compatible cookware with a magnetic base; best suited to households already using or willing to switch to induction-ready pots and pans.

Safety rating

9/10 - strong everyday safety package with child lock, residual heat indicator and thermal overload protection.

Ease of cleaning

9/10 - the flat glass ceramic surface is simple to wipe down and has fewer crevices than traditional gas cooktops.

Key benefits

  • Three induction zones: Lets you heat up to three pans at once for efficient day-to-day meal preparation.
  • Touch and Slide controls: Gives quick, intuitive access to settings with 9 power levels for precise heat adjustment.
  • Low-profile 50 mm design: Sits neatly in modern benchtops for a streamlined built-in look.
  • Glass ceramic surface: Wipes clean easily after cooking, helping reduce cleanup time.
  • Autopot Detection: Recognises the pot position automatically so the correct cooking zone can activate with less setup.
  • Multizone function: Joins two contiguous zones to create a larger cooking area for bigger cookware.
  • Keep Warm function: Helps keep cooked dishes at serving temperature until you are ready to plate.
  • Child lock, residual heat indicator and thermal overload protection: Adds practical safety support for family kitchens.

Q: Will my current pots and pans work on this cooktop?

A: Only induction-compatible cookware will work. Smeg SAI4634D needs pans with a magnetic base, so aluminium, copper or glass cookware without a magnetic layer will not heat, even if the cooking zone itself is selected.

Q: Is the three-zone layout enough for everyday family cooking?

A: Yes, for many small to medium households. The three induction zones let you run several pans at once for most weeknight meals, but a wider cooktop with more zones suits bigger batch cooking or frequent entertaining better.

Q: Is this a practical upgrade from a same-size gas cooktop?

A: Yes, if you want a 60cm cooking surface with faster heat response and a flatter surface to wipe down. The main change is cookware compatibility, and the electrical setup for an induction cooktop should be discussed with your electrician.

Q: How precise are the touch and slide heat controls?

A: The Touch and Slide controls are designed for quick fingertip heat changes rather than knob-style turning. Smeg SAI4634D gives you 9 power levels, which helps with gentler simmering as well as higher heat for faster cooking.

Q: How easy is the black glass cooktop to keep clean?

A: The flat glass ceramic surface is straightforward to wipe after cooking because there are no raised burner caps or protruding knobs. Spills are still best cleaned once the surface has cooled, especially if the residual heat indicator is on.

Q: What safety features does the Smeg SAI4634D have?

A: Smeg SAI4634D includes a child lock, residual heat indicator and thermal overload protection. That combination helps prevent accidental control changes, shows when the surface is still hot, and cuts operation if the cooktop overheats.
