Programmable timers help manage complex recipes, while the child lock and residual heat indicator add safety for busy kitchens.

Rapid heating and pause functions streamline meal preparation, and the AutoVent 2.0 feature supports ventilation management. The cooktop must be installed by a licensed electrician, and cut-out compatibility should be checked before purchase.

    Smeg SAI4954 Induction Cooktop

I bought this cooktop as it was the only one that would fit into my bench having taken out a gas cooktop. It works ok but the instructions to use it are absolutely hopeless and trying to figure out how to find, let alone use, any function other than basic turn on and heat a plate up … well I haven’t worked them out yet!

    New Induction Cooktop

We want to upgrade to induction and were replacing a Smeg Electric Cooktop. This provided the exact same cutout saving on installation costs etc... The upgrade is well worth the additional expenditure.

    Smeg Universale 90cm Induction Cooktop

Its been 3 weeks so far with no problems. Takes a little bit of time to get used to after using gas but worth it. Since it was the only model that would fit my existing cooktop cutout I purchased it and at this stage am more than happy with it. I would recommend it.

    Smeg: It Works

Replaced a gas cooker with this induction stovetop. It works fine, just takes a little bit to get used to the digital controls. Noisier than expected, and heat escapes into drawer underneath which is unexpected

    Gorgeous Slimline in my benchtop

We have only had this installed for a few days, and so far we love it. It looks great in our stone benchtop, much more slimline than the big gas one we had with the cast iron trivets. What a difference it makes to the kitchen. It does make a slight hum when cooking, which is something i will have to get use to, but so far we are happy with it.

At a glance

The Smeg Classic 90cm Induction Cooktop is a spacious five-zone model suited to families and home cooks preparing several dishes at once. Its strengths are responsive induction heating, precise touch and slide control, useful timers and practical safety features. A key limitation is that it needs suitable induction cookware and buyers should confirm benchtop cut-out compatibility before installation.

Things to consider

It offers strong everyday performance and kitchen-friendly features, but it does not target specialist cooks seeking wider zone flexibility or more advanced premium cooking automation.

Family cooking suitability

9/10 - five zones and a wide 90cm layout make it well suited to households cooking multiple dishes at the same time

Energy efficiency score

8/10 - induction heating is typically more direct and responsive than many traditional electric cooktops, helping reduce wasted heat

Cookware compatibility assessment

Requires induction-compatible cookware with a magnetic base, so existing pots and pans may need to be checked before purchase

Safety rating

9/10 - child lock and residual heat indicators provide strong everyday safety support for busy homes

Ease of cleaning

8/10 - the flat black glass ceramic surface is easy to wipe down, though the larger 90cm area means more surface to keep spotless

Key benefits

  • Five Cooking Zones: Lets you run multiple pots and pans at once, making it easier to cook full family meals or batch cook efficiently.
  • 90cm Surface: The larger cooking area gives more room for bigger cookware and reduces crowding during busy meal preparation.
  • Touch and Slide Controls: Makes heat changes quick and precise with nine power levels for better control across different dishes.
  • Programmable Timers: Helps manage several cooking tasks at once and reduces the chance of overcooking.
  • Child Lock: Adds peace of mind in family kitchens by helping prevent accidental operation.
  • Residual Heat Indicator: Clearly shows when zones are still hot, improving day-to-day kitchen safety.
  • Rapid Heating Function: Brings zones up to temperature faster, helping speed up cooking when time is limited.
  • Pause Function: Temporarily stops cooking so you can step away briefly without losing your current settings.

Q: Will this Smeg fit my existing cooktop cut-out?

A: Maybe. Smeg SAI4954D needs the benchtop cut-out checked before purchase, and some replacements drop into an existing opening while others need the stone or laminate modified. It suits a like-for-like replacement best, not every older 90cm cavity.

Q: Does it need special pots and pans for induction cooking?

A: Yes. Smeg SAI4954D works with induction-compatible magnetic cookware, so some existing pots and pans may need replacing. Aluminium, copper or glass cookware will only work if the base is magnetic enough for the cooktop to detect it.

Q: What does AutoVent 2.0 do on this cooktop?

A: AutoVent 2.0 is designed to coordinate the cooktop with compatible ventilation, so extraction can respond as cooking changes. It does not mean the cooktop has built-in extraction, and the feature depends on having a compatible rangehood connected.

Q: Can it use a griddle or other long cookware?

A: Yes. Smeg SAI4954D has a Multizone cooking area that joins compatible zones for larger or longer pans. It still needs induction-compatible cookware, and the base should cover the active area properly for even heating and reliable pan detection.

Q: Is some humming or fan noise normal during cooking?

A: Yes. Smeg SAI4954D can make a light hum or cooling-fan noise while it is heating, especially at higher power or with some cookware. That sound is typical of induction cooking, and the pan base can make it more noticeable on the glass surface.

Q: Is this a good switch from a gas cooktop?

A: Yes. Smeg SAI4954D suits households moving from gas to a flat induction surface, with rapid heating and precise touch control. The trade-offs are learning the controls, using magnetic cookware, and checking the existing cut-out before installation.
