Amazing machine
I’m actually really surprised how good this machine is. I didn’t expect much from such a small appliance. I worked on commercial machines as a barista for decades and now that I’m retired I missed making coffee. I can create a 10/10 professional tasting and looking drinks including amazing latte art. It took me a few days to get all the settings right, but now everything is perfect every time. Programming is easy too. The machine looks so beautiful and premium in my coffee bar and I couldn’t be happier with it. I wish I bought it years ago, it has improved the quality of my mornings. It’s my first Smeg appliance and I’ll definitely buy more

A solid coffee machine. Takes me a while to get a perfect cuppa. No fault of the machine saves so much making my own coffee

At a glance
This manual espresso machine with built-in grinder suits home users who want an all-in-one coffee setup with room to practise barista skills. Its strengths are the integrated conical burr grinder, dual thermoblock system, 20 bar pump and large 2.5 L water tank for multiple coffees. A fair limitation is that its larger footprint makes it less ideal for smaller benches.

Barista experience suitability
8/10 - Strong manual control with 58 mm portafilter, interchangeable baskets and steam wand makes it well suited to users building hands-on espresso skills.
Ease of cleaning score
7/10 - Removable conical burrs, descale indicator and empty water tank alarm help, though an all-in-one machine still needs regular grinder and milk wand cleaning.
Beginner friendliness
8/10 - The built-in grinder and pressurised baskets make it approachable for newcomers while still allowing room to improve technique.
Counter space suitability
Best for medium to large kitchen benches

Key benefits
- Built-in Conical Burr Grinder: Grinds beans directly into the portafilter, helping save bench space versus buying a separate grinder.
- 20 Bar Pump: Provides the pressure system needed to support espresso extraction with 4 low-pressure pre-infusion profiles.
- Dual Thermoblock System: Delivers fast heat-up in about 90 seconds and reduces waiting when switching from brewing at 94 °C to steaming at 100 °C.
- 58 mm Stainless Steel Portafilter: Gives a more traditional hands-on espresso workflow similar to café-style preparation.
- Single and Dual Wall Filter Baskets: Lets beginners start with more forgiving baskets and move to single wall baskets as technique improves.
- 2.5 L Water Tank: Supports making multiple coffees in one session before needing a refill.
- 250 g Bean Hopper: Holds enough beans for regular daily use without constant top-ups.
- Removable Burrs and Descale Alert: Helps simplify grinder maintenance and routine cleaning over time.
Q: What size portafilter does the Smeg EGF03WHAU use?
A: Smeg EGF03WHAU uses a 58mm stainless steel portafilter, which is the larger style commonly associated with more traditional manual espresso prep. It is designed for hands-on tamping and extraction rather than pod-based coffee.
Q: Is the built in grinder automatic or hands on?
A: The built-in grinder supports auto dose, so it can grind the required amount at the push of a button. The coffee making is still manual, so grind setting, tamping, extraction and milk texturing still need user input.
Q: How fast does it switch from brewing to steaming?
A: Smeg EGF03WHAU uses a dual thermoblock system that heats quickly, reaching operating temperature in 90 seconds from switch-on. It also adjusts from coffee at 94°C to steam at 100°C in 3 seconds, which reduces waiting between steps.
Q: Are both beginner and advanced filter baskets included?
A: Yes. This model includes pressurised and single wall filter baskets, so it caters to easier dial-in as well as more technique-led espresso. That makes it more flexible than machines that lock you into only one basket style.
Q: Does the steam wand froth milk automatically or manually?
A: It textures milk manually using a stainless steel steam wand, not an automatic milk system. The included 450ml stainless steel jug helps with hands-on frothing, so this suits buyers who want control rather than one-touch milk drinks.
Q: Can it handle making several coffees in one session?
A: Yes. The 2.5L water tank and 250g bean hopper are sized for multiple coffees before refilling, which suits shared households or entertaining. It is still a manual machine, so each shot and milk drink is prepared individually rather than automatically.
Q: Is cleaning the grinder straightforward on this model?
A: Cleaning is relatively straightforward for an all-in-one espresso machine because the conical burrs are removable. There is also a descale indicator and an empty water tank alarm, but regular hands-on cleaning is still part of owning a manual machine.
