Quality good. But delivery package was so poor

It was delivered on it’s own smeg box. Not even sealed. Box arrived scratched!

A good coffee but a bit finicky

The machine is good to use once you work out the correct grind setting and work out the tamping required for your perfect cuppa. The steam wand is not the greatest but it is okay and gets the job done.

    Amazing coffee and stylish design

The coffee is fantastic (sent husband on mini barista course first, but works well without doing that) easy to use and clean. Looks fabulous and the built in coffee grinder means a fresh cup each time.

At a glance

This manual espresso machine with built-in grinder suits home baristas who want fresh-bean coffee, hands-on control and standout retro styling. Its key strengths are the integrated conical burr grinder, 58 mm portafilter and dual thermoblock system for quicker switching between brewing and steaming. A fair limitation is that it still requires practice and effort, so it is less convenient than a fully automatic machine.

What it’s great for

  • Home espresso making
  • Milk-based coffees
  • Fresh-bean brewing
  • Hands-on coffee prep
  • Entertaining at home

Where it works best

  • Home kitchen
  • Apartment kitchen
  • Entertaining area
  • Coffee-focused household

Who it’s for

  • Home barista
  • Espresso enthusiast
  • Design-conscious buyer
  • Coffee lover upgrading from capsule or basic machines

Things to consider

It offers more control than basic machines, but it is less fast and less forgiving than fully automatic coffee machines, and specialist prosumer setups may offer deeper grind and extraction adjustment.

Barista experience suitability

High - designed for hands-on espresso preparation with grinder integration and manual workflow elements.

Ease of cleaning score

7/10 - manageable for regular home use, but the grinder, portafilter and steam workflow mean more cleanup than capsule or fully automatic machines.

Beginner friendliness

6/10 - integrated grinding helps simplify setup, but manual dosing, tamping and extraction still require practice.

Counter space suitability

Medium - convenient as an all-in-one espresso and grinder unit, though it still takes more bench space than compact manual machines without a grinder.

Noise level vs category average

Slightly above average - the built-in grinder adds noise compared with manual espresso machines that rely on a separate grinder.

Key benefits

  • Built-in conical burr grinder: grinds fresh beans directly for espresso, helping preserve aroma and reducing the need for a separate grinder on the bench.
  • 58 mm stainless steel portafilter: supports a familiar cafe-style workflow for users who want more manual control over puck prep and extraction.
  • Dual thermoblock heating system: reduces waiting time between pulling shots and steaming milk, making back-to-back drink preparation more practical.
  • 20 bar pump: provides the pressure needed for espresso extraction in a home setup.
  • 2.4 L removable water tank: supports multiple coffees before refilling, which is handy for households making several drinks a day.
  • 250 g bean hopper: holds enough beans for regular home use without constant top-ups.
  • Adjustable pre-infusion: lets users fine-tune how water meets the coffee puck for more tailored espresso preparation.
  • Adjustable coffee length settings: makes it easier to personalise shot volume for espresso and milk-based drinks.

Q: Is this espresso machine suitable for beginners learning proper shot dial-in

A: Smeg EGF03BLAU is manageable for a motivated beginner, but it is not a one-touch machine. The built-in grinder, 58mm portafilter and manual tamping workflow reward practice, so expect some trial and adjustment at first.

Q: Can it make back-to-back flat whites without long waiting between steps

A: Smeg EGF03BLAU is designed to reduce waiting between brewing and steaming thanks to its dual thermoblock system. It suits making several milk coffees in a row, though each shot still needs manual grinding, dosing, tamping and texturing.

Q: Do I need a separate grinder for the Smeg EGF03BLAU

A: No. Smeg EGF03BLAU has a built-in conical burr grinder, so it grinds whole beans for each shot without a separate grinder. You still need to dial in the grind and tamping to suit the beans and the result you want.

Q: Can you adjust extraction on this machine for different beans

A: Yes. Smeg EGF03BLAU lets you adjust pre-infusion and coffee length, which helps fine-tune flavour when you change beans or cup style. It does not automate the process, so grind setting and tamping still affect the result.

Q: How much water and coffee beans does this machine hold

A: Smeg EGF03BLAU has a 2.4L water tank and a 250g bean hopper. That capacity suits regular home use and a few coffees before refilling, but it is still a domestic manual machine rather than a high-volume office setup.

Q: What does the 58mm portafilter change in everyday home use

A: The 58mm stainless steel portafilter gives Smeg EGF03BLAU a more traditional espresso workflow. It suits buyers who want hands-on dosing and tamping, but it also means more prep and technique than a push-button automatic machine.
