Hi, I cannot submit a review at this time, we purchased several products June 2021 but due to COVID19 our cabinet maker has been unable to proceed with our renovation. We have all appliances still in their original boxes in our garage safe & secure. Hopefully he can start next week, we are so looking forward to a new kitchen. I will keep in touch & review products when it is all done. Kind regards, Valerie Arnold.

At a glance
This 90 cm Schweigen undermount rangehood is a strong choice for households wanting powerful extraction with less noise near the cooktop. It suits open-plan kitchens, apartments and renovators needing a shallow cabinet fit. Key strengths are the external motor, 900 m3/hr airflow and easy-clean filters. One limitation is that it is not the best match if you want an all-in-one internal-motor setup.
What it’s great for
- Everyday Family Cooking
- Open-Plan Living
- Apartment Kitchens
- Renovation Projects
- Smoke and Odour Removal
Where it works best
- Open-Plan Homes
- Apartments
- Modern Kitchens
- Renovated Kitchens
- Overhead Cabinetry Installations
Who it’s for
- Home Cooks
- Families
- Renovators
- Apartment Owners
- Noise-Conscious Households
Things to consider
Because it uses an external Isodrive motor, installation can be more involved than simpler internal-motor rangehoods.
Open plan kitchen suitability
9/10 - the external motor design helps reduce noise near the cooking zone, making it well suited to open-plan spaces.
Noise level vs category
9/10 - quieter than many undermount rangehoods because the motor is relocated away from the kitchen.
Renovation compatibility
8/10 - the shallow 300 mm cabinet-depth fit makes it renovation-friendly, though external motor installation adds complexity.
Cooking frequency fit
High-frequency cooking - suitable for households that cook often and need strong everyday smoke and odour extraction.
Key benefits
- 900 m3/hr Extraction: Strong airflow helps clear smoke, steam and cooking odours more effectively during everyday cooking and heavier frying.
- External Isodrive Motor: Moves the main noise source away from the cooking area for a quieter experience at the cooktop.
- 90 cm Undermount Design: Provides broad coverage for larger cooktops while staying neatly concealed in overhead cabinetry.
- 300 mm Minimum Cabinet Depth Fit: Works in shallow overhead cabinetry, making it easier to integrate into renovation projects.
- Five Fan Speeds: Gives you flexible control for light simmering through to high-smoke cooking.
- 3 Stainless Steel Mesh Filters: Captures grease effectively and can be removed for straightforward dishwasher cleaning.
- 2 x 3W LED Lights: Uses 6 W total lighting power to illuminate the cooktop with lower energy use than higher-wattage traditional lamp setups.
- 15 Minute Delay Timer with Auto Shut Off: Keeps extracting after cooking, then switches off automatically for added convenience.
Q: Will this fit a shallow 300mm overhead cabinet?
A: Yes. The UM1170-9ST is designed for overhead cabinetry as shallow as 300mm deep, so it suits compact kitchen joinery. It is an undermount model, so it sits concealed in cabinetry rather than acting as a visible canopy feature.
Q: Can the UM1170-9ST be used ducted or recirculating?
A: Yes. The UM1170-9ST supports ducted and recirculating operation, which gives more flexibility during a renovation. Ducted extraction is usually the stronger choice for moving smoke and cooking odours out of the kitchen, while recirculating keeps air in the room.
Q: Is the external motor included with this model?
A: Yes. This model includes the external Isodrive motor that moves the main motor noise away from the cooktop area. That design suits kitchens where conversation matters, but the layout still needs to allow for the remote motor position during installation.
Q: What does 2 boxes mean for this rangehood?
A: It means the rangehood is supplied as two separate cartons rather than one. The undermount hood and the external motor are separated for transport and installation planning, so allow for two packages on delivery and when moving it into the home.
Q: Will it cope with frying, wok cooking, or smoky meals?
A: Yes. UM1170-9ST has a 900m3/hr extraction capacity and 5 fan speeds, so it can step up from lighter simmering to heavier cooking sessions. It is still an undermount rangehood, so results depend on a suitable ducting or recirculating setup.
Q: Are the filters practical to clean after regular cooking?
A: Yes. This model uses 3 stainless steel mesh filters that can go in the dishwasher, which makes routine cleaning simpler after everyday use. Mesh filters are designed to trap grease, so keeping them clean helps maintain airflow over time.
