Easy to use.
I was looking for a radio that would pick up other radio stations not just the local ones. I'm happy with the overall product.

Excellent portable radio
This radio has excellent sound quality and is easy to set-up and then use station presets. It will run without batteries and had good reception even when on the limit for picking up an FM station. I recommend this product..

Excellent unit
Very happy with this radio. Where we are, signal strength is poor. (need to have the wind blowing from the right direction) But now with this unit we can hear our stations loud and clear. And it comes with an alarm setting which is very handy. No more sleeping past the alarm due to no signal. Overall an excellent radio.

At a glance
The Sangean PR-D3BK is a portable AM/FM radio built for listeners who want dependable reception, simple controls and clear sound for news, talkback and music. It suits kitchens, bedrooms and living areas, with battery or mains operation for flexible placement. Its standout strength is long-range AM performance, while the trade-off is that it focuses on radio listening only without the extra connectivity found on more premium audio models.
What it’s great for
- AM talkback listening
- FM music listening
- Bedside radio use
- Kitchen listening
- Daily home listening
- Regional station reception
Where it works best
- Bedroom
- Kitchen
- Living room
- Study
- Holiday home
- Areas with weaker radio signals
Who it’s for
- Everyday listener
- Seniors
- Talkback radio fans
- Regional households
- Bedside radio users
- People wanting simple controls
Things to consider
It is designed primarily for strong AM/FM radio performance, so it lacks the extra playback and wireless features that some premium audio systems provide.
Emergency suitability
Suitable for home backup radio use thanks to battery operation and strong AM/FM reception, but it is not a dedicated emergency radio with built-in torch, siren or charging features.
Portability rating
8/10 - Compact design and battery option make it easy to move between rooms or use away from a power point.
Ease of use score
9/10 - Large backlit display, front preset buttons and straightforward controls suit daily use across a wide age range.
Battery endurance rating
6/10 - Battery operation adds flexibility, but no long-run battery life figure is provided.
Reception quality score
9/10 - Built around a 200 mm bar antenna and long-range AM focus, with strong support for weak and distant stations.
Key benefits
- 200 mm bar antenna: Helps pull in distant AM stations more clearly for listeners who rely on long-range reception.
- Digital tuning: Makes station selection more precise and easier to repeat than manual analogue tuning.
- 10 station presets: Lets you save favourite AM and FM stations for quicker everyday access.
- Backlit LCD display: Improves readability in low light, making bedside and early-morning use simpler.
- Dual alarm system: Allows two separate alarm times for flexible weekday or shared-room routines.
- Sleep timer and snooze: Adds practical bedside convenience for winding down or delaying wake-up time.
- Treble control: Lets you fine-tune clarity for speech-heavy stations such as news and talkback.
- Bass control: Gives radio audio a fuller sound for music and richer voice playback.
Q: Is this Sangean portable radio better suited to AM listening than a basic small portable radio?
A: Yes. This model is designed for long-range AM reception and uses a large ferrite antenna, which generally pulls in weaker AM signals better than compact pocket radios. It can still receive FM, but its standout strength is AM performance.
Q: Can this radio run on batteries as well as mains power?
A: Yes. It can operate from the included AC adaptor or from 6 D batteries, which is useful if you want to move it between rooms or use it where there is no power point. D batteries also suit longer listening than smaller AA-powered sets.
Q: How many stations can be saved on this Sangean radio?
A: It stores 10 preset stations in total, with 5 for AM and 5 for FM. That is handy if you switch between a few favourites often, but it is less suited if you want a large bank of saved stations across both bands.
Q: Does this portable radio work as a bedside alarm clock as well as a daytime radio?
A: Yes. It has dual alarms, so two wake-up times can be set, and you can choose radio or buzzer for the alarm. It also includes snooze and a sleep timer with 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minute settings for bedroom use.
Q: Is tuning this radio manual only, or can it search for stations automatically?
A: It can do both. This model uses digital PLL tuning for accurate station selection, and it also has auto seek or scan to search for available stations. That makes it easier to set up in a new location or quickly find active broadcasts.
Q: Does this model have features that make it easier to use for everyday listening?
A: Yes. It combines a large backlit LCD, front preset buttons and rotary tuning and volume controls, so station changes are straightforward without deep menus. That layout is especially useful for kitchen, bedroom or casual daily use.
