Great little unit.
Light and compact unit. The DAB radio is very good. The CD is easy to operate but the sound would not be loud enough for a party, although it is perfectly adequate for the home environment. CD door is on top and is operated manually. Once you put the CD in and close the door, it starts automatically. I was happy to find a CD player so that I can listen to my old music.

Perfect for my needs
The player is easy to use, well priced and the sound is reasonably good. I live in a unit and have some CD's that I cannot get online eg spotify: so it's nice to be able to hear them again.

A good multi-function unit
The DAB station setup was automatic, CD player works as intended. A useful extra feature would be Bluetooth to an external speaker.

At a glance
The Philips AZB500/79 is a portable boombox-style radio and CD player suited to households wanting both digital and analogue radio plus disc playback in one unit. Its strengths are easy portability, simple controls and fuller low-volume sound with Dynamic Bass Boost. A key limitation is that it relies on wired audio input only, with no Bluetooth or USB playback.

Things to consider
This model focuses on radio and CD convenience rather than modern wireless features, so premium alternatives may offer Bluetooth, USB playback or broader smart connectivity.
Emergency suitability
Moderate - useful for battery-powered radio access, but its larger boombox format is less ideal than compact emergency radios.
Portability rating
7/10 - portable and reasonably light at 2 kg, though bulkier than a small handheld radio.
Ease of use score
8/10 - straightforward controls, LCD display and station-name tuning make daily use simple.
Battery endurance rating
6/10 - battery operation adds flexibility, but requiring 6 x LR14 batteries is less convenient than rechargeable options.
Reception quality score
8/10 - DAB, DAB+ and FM support offers strong listening flexibility with clear digital reception where coverage is available.
Key benefits
- DAB and DAB+ Radio: Access digital stations with clear sound and easy station-name tuning.
- FM Stereo Tuner: Lets you keep listening to local analogue radio stations alongside digital broadcasts.
- CD, CD-R and CD-RW Playback: Plays common disc formats so older music collections stay useful.
- Dynamic Bass Boost: Helps music sound fuller and stronger at low and medium listening levels.
- Portable 2 kg Design: Light enough to move between rooms or take outside without much effort.
- LCD Info Display: Makes it easier to view track and station information while navigating playback.
- 3.5 mm Audio Input: Connects compatible portable devices with a simple wired connection.
- Battery or Mains Operation: Gives you flexible placement at home or portable use away from a power point.
Q: Is the Philips BoomBox CD/FM/DAB a better fit for radio listening or for CDs?
A: Yes, if radio is a priority this model is the more flexible option because it includes both DAB and FM as well as CD playback. That gives digital radio where DAB coverage is available, with FM as a fallback if a station is not on DAB.
Q: What does multi-type CD playback mean on the Philips AZB500/79?
A: It means this unit is designed to play more than one CD format rather than only standard music CDs. The page does not list every supported disc type, so buyers using recordable or specialised discs should confirm exact format compatibility before purchase.
Q: Does DAB make a noticeable difference compared with using FM on this boombox?
A: Yes, DAB can give cleaner reception and easier station selection than FM when digital coverage is strong in the area. This model also keeps FM, which matters if local stations are not broadcast on DAB or indoor reception is better on analogue radio.
Q: Is Dynamic Bass Boost useful if you usually listen at lower volume?
A: Yes, that is one of the main reasons to use it. Philips states Dynamic Bass Boost lifts bass across the volume range, which helps low-end sound stay fuller when listening quietly, instead of sounding thin as the volume is turned down.
Q: Can this Philips boombox vary the order of tracks when playing CDs?
A: Yes, it includes CD Shuffle and Repeat, so tracks do not have to play only in album order every time. That is useful for longer listening sessions and for replaying a favourite disc without manually restarting or selecting tracks again.
