Compact but does the job
This DVD player is much smaller than my previous ones I purchased years ago, but it does what it’s supposed to do. Play DVDs. All formats.

Nice compact unit, but no wifi.
This is a nice compact Blueray/DVD player. Sound and video quality seems quite good. Installation was easy. It comes with several apps built-in, but no wifi. It will only accept a network cable. Very dissapointing for a premium -priced product in this day and age.

At a glance
This Panasonic Blu-ray player is a compact, straightforward option for people who want reliable disc playback plus USB and external HDD media support. It suits smaller living rooms, family use and anyone keeping a Full HD or 4K TV setup simple. Its strengths are broad format compatibility, easy operation and space-saving size. The main limitation is that it is a basic 2D model without premium smart features or 4K disc playback.

Things to consider
This model is best for straightforward Blu-ray and media playback, but it is not the right choice if you want 4K Ultra HD disc support, advanced streaming platforms or higher-end home cinema features.
Home cinema suitability
Good for casual home cinema setups with Blu-ray playback, HDMI connection and surround sound format support.
Ease of use score
9/10 - simple controls, familiar disc playback and compact design make it easy for most households.
Multi-format compatibility
High - supports Blu-ray, DVD, CD and a wide range of music, photo and video file formats via USB and external HDD.
Family suitability
8/10 - easy to operate and suitable for shared disc and media playback, though streaming features are basic.
Portability rating
8/10 - lightweight at 0.8 kg and compact enough to move between rooms when needed.
Key benefits
- Blu-ray, DVD and CD Playback: Lets you enjoy existing movie and music collections from one compact player.
- Up to 4K Upscaling: Improves the look of supported discs on compatible 4K TVs for a sharper viewing experience.
- USB and External HDD Support: Makes it easy to play stored music, photos and video files on your TV.
- Wide File Format Support: Handles formats such as FLAC, MP3, MP4, MKV, Xvid and DSD for more flexible media playback.
- HDMI Connectivity: Connects neatly to a TV or AV receiver with a single common cable type.
- Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD Master Audio Support: Delivers better surround sound compatibility for home entertainment systems.
- Compact Size: The 24.5 cm wide body fits more easily into smaller TV units and tighter entertainment spaces.
- Ethernet Internet Apps: Adds access to simple online apps and content without needing a separate media box.
Q: Will this play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs on my 4K TV?
A: No. Panasonic DMP-BD84GN-K upscales supported Blu-ray and DVD content for a compatible 4K TV, but it does not read 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. It suits standard Blu-ray libraries rather than the UHD disc format.
Q: Is the Panasonic DMP-BD84GN-K a multi-region Blu-ray player?
A: No. Panasonic DMP-BD84GN-K is a standard retail Blu-ray player, not a multi-region model. It is intended for region-compatible discs, so DVDs or Blu-rays bought from other regions may not play unless the player has been separately modified.
Q: Can I play movies from a portable hard drive or USB?
A: Yes. Panasonic DMP-BD84GN-K plays media from USB storage and external hard drives, including MP4, MP3, FLAC, JPEG and DSD files. External HDD support covers drives of 4TB or less in NTFS or FAT32, and some drives may still not play.
Q: Does this player need Wi-Fi for YouTube and internet apps?
A: No. Panasonic DMP-BD84GN-K uses an Ethernet connection for internet apps, so online content is designed to run over a wired home network. If the player cannot reach the router by cable, internet apps will be the part that is limited.
Q: Can it send surround sound to my TV or AV receiver?
A: Yes. Panasonic DMP-BD84GN-K sends audio over HDMI to a TV or AV receiver and supports Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD Master Audio. To hear those formats properly, the connected TV or receiver also needs to support them.
