    Powerful streaming and media device

While the product is a few years old now, it is still probably one of the most powerful streaming devices out. As I bought an OLED tv and set up Dolby Atmos for my home theatre, I wanted the best quality for my media (rather than the cheaper option). I can say it was worth it and I’m glad I spend the extra money.

Great player for x265, MKV, 21060p Netflix and Movies.

Great player would have given it a 5/5 if there wasn't an issue with the power supply still recommend but keep your receipt or look up you power supply online to get another. Know issue with the device Nidia is usually good for replacement. As for the player itself amazing plays all my own home server movies and has all the streaming apps in the store runs on Android. Solid unit fast play back.

Nvidia SHIELDPRO 4K STREAM ANDROID MEDIA PLAYER

Honestly a nice piece of hardware. It may be old technology, but still has better features than what’s being offered in other streaming devices now. Very impressed when I got it. But….. It’s a Google product and THEY think they own it. Once set up and working it updated itself to a new firmware and became locked down. Device experience is now ruined, google blocking side loaded apps. Was a very expensive experience. I thought android devices were open to do what I want with it…. NO.

You do need good internet I know because I had copper to the house at first and it was lagging and couldn't have graphics set hi then I was lucky enough to go to fibre to the house and now I wish I hadn't brought a playstation 5 should have gotten 2 of these instead the games can be difficult to install at first but once you have learnt to do it it's just a little bit of hassle compared to a playstation

    great bit of kit

I've used this shield to replace a HTPC, the system works well, a little tricky if you want to setup your own media library from an external USB Drive. using the included software"Plex" you can do it but, it never tells you that you have to plug the USB it into the shield, givesheild access to it, then use a PC to connect to your plex account over the internet and connect the storage drive/media library (that took me a while to figure out). *.mkv files do play via plex, but with some loss, plex wants you to pay an monthly fee to convert the files so there is no loss of quality, its not worth it in my opinion. the Sheild i purchased had been already opened, there were finger prints all over the device and no documentation at all, there has not been any issue with it so far other than the remote not working until it had been rebooted and reset 10 times., but if i wanted a second hand unit, i could have saved $150 and got one on FB market place. *yes i would recommend this a a replacement to your HTPC, *if you sort your movies into folders, and use the "folder.jpg" system for thumbnails, delete all your folder.jpg's or Plex wont download the correct cover art. small thing, but it looks allot better. * even with the Shield turned off, you can still access your media library (from LAN or Internet) as it keeps power on to the USB drive, handy feature.

    Great Reliable Android Media Device

Great Reliable Android Set Top Box - bought after using some alternate android media device, which was full of issues. Nvidia ShieldPro even though may be outdated in 2025, but still reliable and super fast performing media device. Even the remote is very convenient to use. Whether streaming the media or playing locally from attached HDD, whether playing fullHD or 4K quality, on every occasion didn't miss the beat and performed seamless. The DTS and Dolby outputs work perfectly. Overall very happy with Nvidia ShieldPro TV and happy to recommend to try.

At a glance

The Nvidia SHIELDPRO 4K STREAM ANDROID MEDIA PLAYER is a premium streaming box for households that want smooth 4K playback, strong app performance and flexible networking. It suits home theatre users, streamers and families who use voice assistants. Key strengths are fast navigation, wired or wireless connectivity and Dolby Atmos pass-through. The main limitation is its 16GB internal storage, which can feel tight for larger app or local media libraries.

  • Home Theatre Use
  • Voice-Controlled Entertainment
  • Local Media Playback
  • App-Based TV Streaming

Who it’s for

  • Home Theatre Enthusiast
  • Streaming Household
  • Family User
  • Android TV User
  • Voice Assistant User

Things to consider

The 16GB internal storage is modest compared with more specialist media systems, so heavy app users or people with large local media libraries may rely on external USB storage.

App coverage score

9/10 - Strong Android TV app support and broad streaming flexibility, though actual app availability can vary by service and region.

Smart tv compatibility

Works best with TVs that have an HDMI input and supports 4K HDR playback on compatible displays.

Ease of setup rating

8/10 - Straightforward to connect and configure, especially if you already use Google services or Alexa.

Family friendliness

Good for shared household use thanks to voice control, broad app access and simple streaming from mobile devices.

Remote control usability

8/10 - Easy for everyday playback and navigation, with voice control adding convenience for quick searches.

Key benefits

  • 4K HDR10 Streaming: Delivers sharp Ultra HD picture quality with improved contrast and colour on compatible TVs.
  • Tegra X1+ Processing: Helps apps open quickly and keeps menu navigation smooth during everyday streaming.
  • Dual Network Options: Built-in dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet give you flexible ways to maintain stable streaming.
  • Dolby Atmos and DTS-X Pass-Through: Sends immersive surround sound to compatible audio systems over HDMI.
  • Built-In Voice Control: Lets you search, launch content and control playback with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.
  • Chromecast 4K Built In: Makes it easy to cast supported content from compatible phones, tablets and laptops to your TV.
  • Two USB 3.0 Ports: Allows easy connection of external storage, keyboards or other accessories for a more flexible media setup.
  • Wide Audio Format Support: Handles common music and media file types such as AAC, FLAC, MP3 and WMA for broader playback compatibility.

Q: Can I add external storage to SHIELD Pro for local media?

A: Yes. NVIDIA SHIELD Pro has two USB 3.0 ports, so it can use compatible external drives for local media or added app space. The built-in 16GB is better for lighter use, while larger libraries are more practical on external storage.

Q: Does SHIELD Pro work better over Ethernet than Wi-Fi?

A: Yes. Gigabit Ethernet is usually the better choice when the router is nearby, because it avoids some Wi-Fi dropouts and congestion during 4K streaming. Dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi still suits rooms where cabling is not practical.

Q: Can Nvidia SHIELD Pro sideload Android apps and APK files?

A: Yes, in many cases. NVIDIA SHIELD Pro runs Android TV, so most app access comes through the Play Store, but extra app installs can be possible for some users. Compatibility, remote control behaviour and ongoing access can change after app or firmware updates.

Q: Will SHIELD Pro pass Dolby Atmos to a soundbar or AV receiver?

A: Yes. NVIDIA SHIELD Pro supports Dolby Atmos and DTS-X pass-through over HDMI for compatible soundbars, AV receivers and TVs. The full format only comes through when the app, the content and the rest of the HDMI chain also support it.

Q: Is this a good option for replacing an older smart TV system?

A: Yes. It can add Android TV apps, Chromecast 4K and voice control to a TV with an HDMI input, which is useful when the built-in smart system feels dated. It will not improve the TV panel itself, so picture quality still depends on the screen you already own.

Q: Can SHIELD Pro play media from a USB drive?

A: Yes. NVIDIA SHIELD Pro can play local media from a compatible USB drive using supported apps, and it handles a wide range of audio formats such as AAC, FLAC, MP3 and WMA. File support still depends on the app and the exact media format.
