The best controller for Switch
The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is a fantastic upgrade for anyone looking to enhance their gaming experience. It’s comfortable to hold, with responsive buttons and a long-lasting battery that makes it perfect for extended play. The motion controls and seamless connectivity add to its appeal, though it’s a bit pricey compared to third-party options. Overall, it’s worth the investment for serious gamers.

At a glance
The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is a comfortable wireless controller for players who want a more traditional gamepad feel on Switch, Switch OLED or Switch Lite. It suits adults, kids and regular multiplayer use, with strong battery life, motion controls, HD rumble and amiibo support. A fair limitation is that it offers limited customisation compared with premium competitive controllers.

Things to consider
It focuses on comfort and core Switch features rather than advanced tuning, so it lacks the extra remapping and specialist competitive controls found on some enthusiast gamepads.
Platform compatibility
Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED, Nintendo Switch Lite
Competitive gaming suitability
7/10 - responsive and comfortable for serious play, but lacks advanced competitive customisation features.
Comfort score
9/10 - full-size grip and larger buttons suit longer sessions for both adults and kids.
Customisation flexibility
4/10 - strong core functionality, but limited hardware customisation compared with specialist controllers.
Portability rating
7/10 - easy to carry for a full-size controller, though less compact than smaller travel-focused options.
Key benefits
- 40-Hour Battery Life: Up to 40 hours of runtime supports multiple play sessions between charges.
- USB Type-C Charging: You can keep playing while the controller charges, helping avoid interruptions during longer sessions.
- Full-Size Grip: The larger controller shape is more comfortable for extended gaming than smaller built-in controls.
- Motion Controls: Built-in accelerometer and gyro enable tilt and movement input in compatible Switch games.
- HD Rumble: Vibration feedback adds more tactile feel during supported gameplay moments.
- Built-In NFC: Scan compatible amiibo figures directly with the controller for supported in-game features.
- Bluetooth 3.0 Wireless: Wireless pairing makes it easy to play without being tethered to the console.
- LED Status Indicators: Lights clearly show charging and connection status at a glance.
Q: Does this controller work with Nintendo Switch Lite consoles
A: Yes. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller pairs wirelessly with Nintendo Switch Lite as well as Switch and Switch OLED consoles. On a Switch Lite, it is a separate controller, so the console needs to be set up for tabletop-style play.
Q: Can you use the Pro Controller while it is charging
A: Yes. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can be used while connected with USB Type-C, so play does not need to stop when the battery runs low. A full charge takes up to 6 hours, and a full battery is rated for up to 40 hours of play.
Q: Are motion controls and rumble supported in all Switch games
A: No. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller includes an accelerometer, gyroscope and HD rumble, but games need to support those features before they do anything. In games without that support, it still works as a standard wireless controller.
Q: Will amiibo figures scan on the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
A: Yes. Built-in NFC lets the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller scan compatible amiibo figures in supported games. NFC is there for amiibo use, not general tap pairing, so game support still decides whether extra in-game content appears.
Q: Is a USB-C charging cable included in the box
A: Yes. The box includes a USB charging cable, so it can be recharged without buying a separate lead straight away. The controller uses USB Type-C for charging, and its LEDs show when it is charging or already connected.
