At a glance
The NEXTBASE 122 Dash Cam is a straightforward, entry-level dash camera ideal for drivers seeking reliable, everyday recording without complex features. It’s well-suited for first-time users or those wanting a simple safety upgrade. Key strengths include easy installation, clear daytime footage, and discreet design. However, it lacks advanced features like app connectivity and high-end night vision found in premium models.
What it’s great for
- Basic Driving Footage
- Everyday Commuting
- Road Safety
- Insurance Evidence
Where it works best
- City Driving
- Suburban Roads
- Short Trips
- Personal Vehicles
Who it’s for
- First-Time Dash Cam Users
- Budget-Conscious Drivers
- Everyday Commuters
- Learner Drivers
Things to consider
Lacks advanced features like Wi-Fi connectivity and high-definition night vision available in mid-range or premium dash cams.
Accident evidence quality score
7/10 - Provides clear HD footage suitable for most insurance claims, but lacks higher resolution detail of premium models.
Night recording performance
5/10 - Basic night vision; sufficient for well-lit streets but less effective in low-light or rural conditions.
Parking mode suitability
Limited - Does not include dedicated parking mode for 24/7 monitoring.
Ease of installation rating
9/10 - Simple setup with included mounting options makes it accessible for all users.
App connectivity score
0/10 - No app or wireless connectivity; footage transfer requires manual SD card removal.
Key benefits
- Simple One-Button Operation: Makes recording and saving footage straightforward for all users.
- HD Recording: Captures clear video in 720p for reliable evidence in case of incidents.
- Wide-Angle Lens: Covers a broad view of the road to ensure key events are recorded.
- Loop Recording: Automatically overwrites oldest footage, so you never run out of space.
- G-Sensor Protection: Locks important files during sudden impacts to prevent overwriting.
- Discreet Compact Design: Fits unobtrusively on your windscreen for minimal distraction.
- Easy Installation: Mounts quickly with included adhesive or suction cup for hassle-free setup.
- Automatic Start/Stop: Begins recording with vehicle ignition for worry-free operation.
Q: Does this dash cam record the rear window or car interior?
A: No. The NEXTBASE 122 is a front-only dash cam, so it records the road ahead rather than the cabin or rear view. It suits simple incident recording, but it is not the right choice if you want coverage in multiple directions.
Q: Can footage be transferred to a phone without removing the card?
A: No. NEXTBASE 122 does not include Wi-Fi or app connectivity, so footage is transferred by handling the MicroSD card rather than sending clips wirelessly. That is fine for occasional use, but slower if you want quick phone access.
Q: How well can the 122 read number plates at night?
A: NEXTBASE 122 records in 720p at 30 frames per second, so number plates are usually clearest in good daylight and at shorter distances. In low light or on darker roads, fine detail is less reliable than higher-resolution dash cams.
Q: Will the dash cam keep recording while the car is parked?
A: It can capture parked incidents only while it has power. NEXTBASE 122 offers parked-vehicle style protection, but it is not a full 24/7 monitoring setup on its own, so recording depends on how the camera is powered in the vehicle.
Q: Why does the NEXTBASE 122 say the memory is full?
A: Loop recording should overwrite the oldest files automatically, but impact-protected clips are not erased in the same way. If too many saved event files build up on the MicroSD card, the camera can reach capacity and need file management.
Q: Can I move this dash cam between different cars easily?
A: Yes. NEXTBASE 122 includes both a suction mount and a Click&Go PRO mount, so it can be moved more easily than an adhesive-only setup. It still needs a suitable in-car power connection each time you swap vehicles.
