At a glance
The HP 965XL Black Original Ink Cartridge is a high-yield ink option for select HP OfficeJet Pro printers, aimed at users who print lots of text documents and want dependable, consistent results. Its key strengths are strong page yield, easy replacement and reliable compatibility in supported HP models. One limitation is that it is only suitable for specific HP printers, so it is less flexible than universal refill alternatives.

Printer compatibility assessment
9/10 - Strong fit for supported HP OfficeJet Pro models, but compatibility is limited to specific series so buyers should check printer model before purchase.
Page yield value score
8/10 - High-yield format offers solid value for regular black document printing, especially in busy home or office use.
Ease of replacement rating
9/10 - Straightforward drop-in cartridge swap in compatible printers with little fuss.
Business vs home suitability
Better suited to business and home office users with steady document-printing needs, though it also works well for households that print often.
Key benefits
- High-yield black ink: Delivers up to about 2,000 pages, making it better suited to frequent printing than standard-yield cartridges.
- Original HP formulation: Helps produce crisp black text for everyday documents, reports and forms.
- Consistent output: Designed to maintain dependable print quality across the cartridge’s usable life in supported printers.
- Easy cartridge replacement: Installs quickly in compatible HP OfficeJet Pro printers with minimal setup.
- Office-focused performance: Well suited to regular monochrome document workloads such as invoices, records and correspondence.
- Single-colour replacement: Lets you replace only the black cartridge when needed, which is practical for text-heavy printing.
Q: Which HP printers use the HP 965XL Black Original Ink Cartridge?
A: This cartridge suits selected HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 and 9020 series printers, including 9010, 9012, 9016, 9018, 9019, 9020, 9026 and 9028. It is not designed for HP Envy, Photosmart or other HP ranges that use different cartridge families.
Q: Is the HP 965XL Black cartridge worth choosing over the standard HP 965 cartridge?
A: Yes, if you print regularly. The 965XL black cartridge is rated for 2,000 A4 pages at 5% coverage, so it usually needs replacing less often than a standard-capacity version and can lower the cost per page for heavier home office use.
Q: What does the 2,000-page yield mean for the HP 965XL Black cartridge in real use?
A: The 2,000-page figure is based on A4 pages at 5% coverage, which is a light text-printing test. Real yield will usually be lower if you print bold documents, graphics, forms or dense black areas, and higher if most pages are short text only.
Q: Can the HP 965XL Black cartridge be refilled or reused with non-HP ink?
A: It can sometimes be physically refilled, but that is not what this original HP cartridge is designed for.
Q: Why choose an original HP 3JA84AA cartridge instead of a compatible alternative?
A: The main reason is model-specific compatibility. This original HP 3JA84AA cartridge is made for supported OfficeJet Pro 9010 and 9020 series printers, while some third-party cartridges can vary in chip recognition, ink level reporting and day-to-day consistency.
