At a glance
The Google Home Speaker is a compact smart speaker for people who want easy voice control, reliable streaming, and simple smart home help in smaller rooms. It suits everyday households, bedside tables, and desks, with strong connectivity, clear omni-directional sound, and practical privacy controls. The main limitation is that its single 58 mm driver is better for casual listening than the richer, more powerful audio you get from premium speakers.

Things to consider
Its compact single-driver design is convenient for smaller spaces, but it will not deliver the bass depth, stereo separation, or room-filling power of larger premium smart speakers.
Smart home ecosystem compatibility
Best suited to the Google Home ecosystem, with support for Google Home app control, Google Assistant compatibility, Thread 1.3 border router functions, and pairing with compatible Google TV Streamers.
Voice assistant performance score
8.5/10 - Responsive hands-free control with 3 far-field microphones and Gemini integration, especially strong for Google-based households.
Music quality rating
7/10 - Clear and room-friendly for casual listening, but the compact single 58 mm driver is not built for deep bass or premium hi-fi sound.
Multi-room flexibility
8/10 - Compact size and app-based setup make it easy to place around the home, with useful integration for broader Google home audio setups.
Family friendliness
8.5/10 - Simple voice control, touch inputs, visible listening status, and a physical mic mute switch make it easy for shared household use.
Key benefits
- Omni-directional sound: Helps spread audio evenly around the room so music and voice responses are easy to hear from different positions.
- 58 mm full-range driver: Delivers clear everyday audio for music, podcasts, alarms, and voice replies in compact spaces.
- Gemini voice assistant: Lets you control music, ask questions, manage routines, and get hands-free help throughout the day.
- Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4: Supports modern wireless connections for stable streaming and flexible playback from compatible devices.
- 3 far-field microphones: Helps the speaker hear voice commands from across the room for easier hands-free use.
- Hardware mic mute switch: Gives you a clear physical way to disable the microphones when you want extra privacy.
- Capacitive touch controls: Makes quick volume and playback adjustments simple without needing to open an app.
- Google Home app support on iOS and Android: Makes setup and smart home management accessible for most households.
Q: Can it be used for TV audio with Google TV Streamer?
A: Yes. Google Home Speaker can pair with compatible Google TV Streamers to improve TV sound over the television's built-in speakers. It is better suited to casual TV listening than a full home theatre or soundbar replacement.
Q: Does the mute switch fully turn off the microphones?
A: Yes. Google Home Speaker has a 2-stage hardware mic mute switch on the bottom that disables the microphones rather than just lowering sensitivity. When mute is on, voice commands will not work until the switch is turned back on.
Q: Will this speaker suit bass-heavy music in a large room?
A: No. Google Home Speaker uses a 58 mm full-range driver, so it is better for everyday music, podcasts and voice responses than deep bass or high-volume listening. It suits smaller rooms and close-range placement better than big open spaces.
Q: Can you play music over Bluetooth without using Wi-Fi?
A: Yes. Google Home Speaker supports Bluetooth v5.4, so it can play audio directly from a paired device without relying on Wi-Fi for the music stream. Wi-Fi 6 is still the better option for voice features, app control and smart home functions.
Q: Does it work as a Thread border router for smart devices?
A: Yes. Google Home Speaker includes Thread 1.3 border router support on 2.4 GHz, which can help connect compatible smart home devices in a Google Home setup. It is most useful for Thread-ready products, not older Wi-Fi-only or Bluetooth-only devices.
Q: Is this a portable speaker or does it stay plugged in?
A: It stays plugged in. Google Home Speaker uses a 30W Type-C USB-PD PPS power supply and comes with a 1.5 m captive power cable connected to the speaker. Its compact size makes it easy to move, but it does not run on a built-in battery.
