Great watch - updated from VivoActive 3

I've had a Vivoactive 3 for years, it was great, but the battery was just not lasting these days. The Vivoactive 5 is a nice update - similar feel, nice new colours (including colour photos), but most importantly, a battery that no longer dies in 1 day or with a single GPS activity. It was quick to swap the watch band from my old watch to this one. The only difference, I wear it on my left hand, and the Vivoactive doesn't let you switch which way up the screen goes (unlike the Vivoactive 5), however, the buttons stick out less, so it hasn't been a problem.

Excellent for the price I paid

At the sale price I paid, the Vivoactive 5 is excellent value. I almost passed on it because the Vivoactive 6 is available, but the newer model only adds a handful of extra features. For most people, the 5 does everything you need. I use it to track cycling, walking and kettlebell workouts, and it handles all three well. The controls are simple and easy to learn, and it’s comfortable enough to wear all day without noticing it. If you can get it on sale, it’s an easy recommendation.

    Great Apple Watch alternative

Tracks exercise, heart rate, sleep etc and links to Strava. Able to see SMS received but not able to send. Everything I needed with a smaller price tag

Great fitness smartwatch with good battery life that can usually last around a week. The display is visible even under direct sunlight. However, the software is buggy and hard to use at times.

Key benefits

  • Built-in GPS: Tracks outdoor walks, runs and rides more accurately without needing to carry your phone.
  • AMOLED display: The bright 1.2 inch screen is easy to read at a glance for workouts, notifications and daily use.
  • Battery life: Lasts up to 11 days, or up to 21 days in battery saver mode, so you can charge less often.
  • Health monitoring: Tracks heart rate, blood oxygen, respiration, stress, sleep and women's health for a broader view of daily wellbeing.
  • Music storage: 4GB of onboard storage lets you keep music on the watch for phone-free listening during workouts.
  • Swim-friendly water resistance: Rated to 5 ATM, making it suitable for pool sessions and everyday water exposure.
  • Lightweight build: The silicone strap and polymer case help keep it comfortable for all-day wear.
  • Garmin Pay: Supports contactless payments so you can leave your wallet behind on short outings.

Q: Can I leave my phone at home for runs?

A: Yes. Garmin Vivoactive 5 has built-in GPS, on-watch music storage and Garmin Pay, so it can handle tracking, listening and tap-to-pay without your phone nearby. A phone is still needed for initial setup, syncing and app-based features.

Q: Does this watch have maps for hiking or route navigation?

A: No. Garmin Vivoactive 5 uses GPS to record outdoor activities, but it is aimed at everyday fitness rather than full mapping or advanced route guidance. Buyers wanting on-watch maps should look at Garmin's more outdoor-focused ranges.

Q: Will the Garmin Vivoactive 5 fit a smaller wrist comfortably?

A: It fits wrists from 125 to 190mm, which suits many smaller to average adult wrists. The lightweight case, aluminium bezel and silicone strap are designed for all-day wear, but buyers outside that wrist range may need a different size or model.

Q: Is Garmin Vivoactive 5 suitable for pool swimming and daily wear?

A: Yes. Garmin Vivoactive 5 is rated to 5 ATM and includes swim features, so it suits pool sessions as well as everyday wear around water. That rating is for swimming, not diving or high-speed water sports where pressure is higher.

Q: How long does the battery last between charges on this model?

A: Garmin Vivoactive 5 lasts up to 11 days in smartwatch mode, or up to 21 days in battery saver mode. Expect shorter time between charges if you use power-hungry features more often, such as the bright display, GPS tracking or stored music.

Q: Is it more of a fitness watch than a full smartwatch?

A: Garmin Vivoactive 5 leans more towards fitness and wellness than a general-purpose smartwatch.
